West Virginia University Institute of Technology (WVU Tech), part of the WVU system of campuses located in Beckley, WV, is currently inviting applications and nominations for an Assistant Director for the Tech Adventures program.

The College of Business, Humanities and Social Sciences in partnership with the Division of Student Life, is seeking an outstanding teacher and field leader to assist with the organization and delivery of our new Adventure Recreation Management degree and Tech Adventures student life programs.

Within an hour or less of the WVU Beckley campus are world class adventure recreation resources, including whitewater paddling, rock climbing and mountain biking. The New River Gorge National River, Gauley River National Recreation Area, Bluestone National Scenic River, Monongahela National Forest, the Boy Scouts of America’s Summit Bechtel Reserve High Adventure Base and numerous state parks and forests provide endless adventure opportunities for students and staff.

In order to be successful in this position, the ideal candidate will:

  • Assist in the organization and delivery of WVU Tech’s adventure recreation academic degree and student life program.
  • Teach six undergraduate hours per semester of adventure recreation technical skills courses, leadership and/or program management.
  • Assume primary responsibility for the summer outdoor orientation program or the student outings program operated throughout the academic year.
  • Perform student advising, program risk management, committee participation and program evaluation.
  • Assist with staff recruitment, leadership development and supervision.
  • Share in leadership of student life outing programs with other department staff.

Qualifications

  • Completion of a Master’s Degree by August 2018 is required
  • Master’s degree in outdoor recreation programming, adventure education or related field is preferred. Candidates with a relevant degree and professional experience in the adventure field will be considered
  • Two (2) years of experience leading field programs (trip log required)
  • At least (3) years of experience in management of outdoor programs or businesses is preferred
  • Experience in the leadership of outdoor programs for personal growth and development

Requirements

  • Current Wilderness First Responder and CPR Certification
  • Instructor or instructor-trainer credentials and related teaching experience in one or more of the following skill areas (please provide credential information and expiration date): -Leave No Trace Ethics -Mountain Biking or Bicycle Touring -Ropes Course Facilitation -Canopy Tour Facilitation -Wilderness First Aid -Whitewater paddling -Rock Climbing -Backcountry Living
  • Valid driver’s license and experience driving passenger vans with trailer
