The Transfer Student Center within the Centers for Educational Equity and Excellence (CE3) is committed to ensuring that all students who transfer to UC Berkeley from other colleges and universities are able to successfully navigate the transition to the 4-year university and have access to educational programs, resources, and opportunities that promote achievement and success.
Fourteen programs and centers make up the cluster of units within the Centers for Educational Equity and Excellence (inclusive of EOP, The Transfer Student Center, Student Support Services Program (SSS), Re-entry Student Services, Student Parent Center, Veteran Student Center, the Undocumented Student Program, Basic Needs Initiatives, Berkeley Underground Scholars, Cal Nerds, Miller Scholars Programs, and the POSSE Scholars Programs). Each program provides a wide array of innovative programs and services that focus on student success, engagement, and achievement. The programs work to ensure the successful transition into the university, academic success, graduation, and transition to graduate programs and professional careers. These programs are instrumental in fulfilling the university mission with regard to equity, access, and inclusion.
This position involves providing services and direct assistance to students who transfer to UC Berkeley from other colleges and universities. Transfer students are a diverse population of students including students from underserved backgrounds such as underrepresented, low income, first-generation college students, international students, and those transferring from other 4-year institutions. The Transfer Student Center provides a broad array of services that include credit-bearing courses and facilitation, individual advising and counseling, academic enrichment workshops, mentoring programs, service-learning internships, leadership opportunities, and community-building events. This position assists in the coordination, facilitation, and implementation of programs and services that assist in academic success, persistence, enrichment, and degree attainment for all transfer students.
This is a 3-year contract position. This role is projected to work remotely until at least June 30, 2021.
- Facilitates group discussions / seminars / courses. Meets with students enrolled in courses and provides support and referrals based on individual assessment of needs and interests.
- Provides counseling to transfer students on now to navigate the research university, engage in educational enrichment opportunities, and successfully interact with university systems and resources, providing information and referral assistance as necessary. Incorporating a variety of theoretical approaches, the incumbent manages a caseload of students from pre-admission outreach through preparation for post-graduation transition to employment and/or graduate school; assists with transfer student assessment/analysis of students' needs and assists with developing a plan of action to enhance student academic success.
- Assists with student services program implementation and facilitation including courses, workshops, service learning projects, outreach, yield, and other campus-related activities.
- Assists with training and oversight of undergraduate work-study students and interns.
- Keeps abreast of transfer student trends in higher education, community college outreach, and transfer student issues. Refers students to appropriate specialized programs and resources.
- Other duties as assigned.
- Knowledge of the trends, characteristics, and issues facing transfer students as well as theories of multicultural counseling, learning, identity development, and human and career development.
- Knowledge of personal growth and development areas, including critical thinking, effective communication, self-appraisal, self-esteem, clarification of values, appropriate career choices, and leadership.
- Knowledge of the methodologies used to enhance student achievement such as collaborative teaching/learning models, strategies for effective counseling and peer mentoring, small group facilitation and training, coaching, mentoring and student development.
- Knowledge of trends and issues facing low-income and first-generation college, underrepresented, disadvantaged, physically challenged, and under prepared students in higher education.
- Knowledge and experience in working with transfer students and historically underrepresented ethnic minority communities, low-income, and first-generation college students.
- Knowledge and experience in analyzing problems and identifying solutions for problem-solving; skills and experience in developing and facilitating programs.
- Knowledge of federal, state, and local requirements to provide for access, health, confidentiality, and safety; legal and ethical issues governing the delivery of counseling services.
- Strong oral and written communication skills, interpersonal and presentation skills. Ability to communicate information in small and large group settings.
- Masters in Counseling, Education, Social Work or 2 years of related work experiences.
- Knowledge of University, college, and major requirements, policies and procedures, including policies on handling student records and confidential documents.
- Familiarity with research methodologies and research designs.
- Proficient computer skills including databases, word processing, spreadsheets, PowerPoint, and web-based systems.
Salary & Benefits
This is a non-exempt, biweekly paid appointment. Hourly pay is commensurate with experience within the range of $26.34 - $29.69 per hour.
