The TUSM Office of Faculty Affairs (OFA) is responsible for the appointment, reappointment, promotion, tenure (APT), appointment credentialing, and orientation and promotions programming for our medical school faculty, residents and fellows at Tufts- affiliated training programs. The OFA also provides consultation on preparation for these processes and serves as a resource for faculty-related data, inquiries, policies and procedures. The OFA works closely with the dean, provost and other University officials, department chairs, affiliated academic deans/officers, administrators, and our faculty.
Tufts University School of Medicine (TUSM) has approximately 5000 faculty including clinicians, scientists/researchers, educators, and public health practitioners. Faculty include several hundred employed faculty in the five basic science departments, the department of public health and community medicine, and the department of family medicine, in addition to mostly non-compensated clinical faculty in the 20 clinical departments across multiple affiliated hospitals and practice sites. Additionally, TUSM provides annual academic appointments for approximately 1200 residents and fellows based at the Tufts-affiliated hospitals and programs.
Currently OFA operations remain remote as of summer 2021, but we envision transitioning back to a hybrid model based in Boston, MA (remote and in person) in fall 2021 based on University, state and federal guidance.
The Faculty Affairs Officer (FAO) serves as a central resource for information about faculty for the school and provides guidance and advice on senior faculty appointments, promotions, academic, family and medical leaves of absence, and other related policy matters for affiliated faculty and full-time TUSM employed faculty. The FAO manages all senior appointments and promotions processes, including reviewing and providing guidance for all cases, manages two promotions committees and their subcommittees, working groups and events. The FAO manages all senior and honorific faculty processes and maintains data to ensure reporting accuracy through the University faculty information system (FIS). Provides guidance, input and recommended revisions to faculty handbook, policies and procedures as well as for OFA business processes enhancements.
