Departmental Overview

MSSE is a program designed to formally train students in computational science and data science for molecular science and to provide them with the tools to develop best software engineering practices along with the leadership and management skills needed to lead large software enterprises. The program combines the immense intellectual strengths of the College of Chemistry, the College of Engineering, and the Fung Institute at UC Berkeley, with online courses created by world experts and committed faculty in the training of the next generation of leaders in scientific computing and software engineering. One of the central missions of MSSE is to develop a workforce that is highly prepared to work in a multidisciplinary environment and build software infrastructures that are robust, portable, extensible, and easy to use. Another central mission is to develop a diverse workforce, with special emphasis on overcoming the low participation levels of women and underrepresented groups in computational science and software engineering and leadership representation in these areas.

Responsibilities
  • In close coordination with the Executive Director, identifies and builds a pool of highly-experienced lecturers from industry and government labs.
  • Collaborates with academia and industry to define capstone projects with software engineering relevance.
  • Coordinates student recruitment and admissions with the faculty and administrative staff.
  • Represents the organization in working with funding agencies, sponsors and donors, developing financial resources and programs.
  • Researches opportunities for extramural funding to support programmatic and curricular needs.
  • Develops a mentorship program that allows students to meet with faculty and members of the industry and government labs.
  • Develops programming to support underrepresented students.
  • Supervises all program staff, including the Instructional Designer to design and develop course materials that are pedagogically sound and innovative, Student Services Advisors, and marketing staff assigned to support MSSE.
  • Creates and implements specialized career planning and development service.
  • Assists with post-degree job placement, leveraging strategic industrial partnerships.
  • Identifies potential scholarships and internships for students.
  • Compiles and maintains data and effective metrics to make strategic programming decisions.
  • Markets and promotes the program to prospective students.
  • Promotes programs to academic, governmental lab, and industry partners.
  • Serves on committees representing the program, participating in short term and long term planning.


Required Qualifications
  • Academic background, technical proficiency, and experience in selected area of research involving computational science or software-related fields.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of administrative, budgetary, human resources and financial principles and practices.
  • Strong oral and written communication skills.
  • Strong ability to think creatively and independently on concepts requiring advanced analytical skills.
  • Advanced interpersonal skills and ability to work with dynamic and diverse groups of faculty, staff, and students to achieve results.
  • Multicultural competencies; ability to work with diverse populations.
  • Strong ability to work collaboratively with internal and external peers and managers.
  • Advanced knowledge of advising and counseling techniques.
  • Demonstrated experience in cultivating and promoting student academic success.
  • Skills in monitoring/assessing people, processes or services, to make improvements.
  • Skills in project management, program planning and administration.
  • In-depth knowledge of the field's post-degree employment opportunities and practices.
  • Customer service orientation and ability to be flexible and adaptable to change.
  • Advanced degree in related area and / or equivalent experience / training.


Preferred Qualifications
  • Solid proposal develop and grant writing experience.
  • Terminal degree in a related area (PhD, JD, MD, etc.) and/or equivalent experience/training preferred.

This is a part-time (24-hours per week), 2-year contract (temporary) appointment. Renewal is possible with continued funding.
