The School of Public Health (SPH) is a large and complex professional school at UC Berkeley, with a mission to improve population health, especially for the most vulnerable, through interdisciplinary collaborations, preeminent education, and transformational research.
The School is comprised of six academic divisions and 30 research centers and programs, with over 200 faculty, 120 academic/research staff, 155 management/professional/ administrative staff, and 285 student researchers/instructors/workers. The School offers a core MPH degree with nine areas of study, along with five MA and MS degree programs, a DrPH and five PhD degree programs, and five concurrent programs with other UC Berkeley schools and colleges; in addition, the School offers a joint degree with UC San Francisco. The School launched UC Berkeley's first on-line degree program in 2012 and is rapidly expanding the program to reach a wide range of domestic and international audiences through online degrees, certificate programs, and executive education. The School enrolls approximately 575 graduate students per year, as well as educating roughly 440 undergraduate students through an upper-division public health major. The School's more than 13,000 graduates can be found working throughout the world, in both the public and private sectors.
The Safe Transportation Research and Education Center (SafeTREC), a program of the UC Berkeley School of Public Health, is a center involving academics, governmental officials, and community-based organizations in the California. With sponsored funding, the Center's objective is to prevent injuries from traffic collisions through projects encompassing research, training, public service, and/or policy. The Project Coordinator will coordinate special projects.
Applies professional concepts to perform analysis of transportation and injury data and systems pertaining to moderately complex projects, policies and/or processes and functions. Analyze scope of projects and determine tasks to support the implementation of the activities, including planning and directing meetings and conference calls with key partners, developing critical routes and timelines, and if applicable, suggesting and conducting new strategies and establishing contact with new programs for potential partnership and collaboration. In addition, follow up with all outside communications regarding assigned projects.
Gathers and assembles analytical and factual data on assigned problems and issues to prepare reports and/or analyses summarizing information on the assigned issues and commenting on other significance for internal department constituents. Contacts internal and external staff at all organizational levels to gather information needed for project implementation. Maintain monthly or weekly communication with multiple coordinators and program managers involved and participating in sponsored projects offsite.
Prepares, edits and modifies documents including research reports, manuscripts, presentations and proposals. Create summaries, frameworks, and overviews for current key participants and partners and potential participants/partners. Document the various stages and steps of project for analysis and improvement of future cycles. Work with Administrative Manager to prepare fundraising materials for projects to seek outside gifts or grants to support projects.
Using subject matter knowledge, collects and prepares and presents information for use in discussions, meetings of high level management and external constituents. Analyze opportunities, needs, and existing resources to expand, consolidate, or implement projects depending upon funding sources, funding allocation, or funding obligation.
On a project basis, performs analytical studies on a variety of new opportunities, emerging health disparities and needs, or current problems/issues/policies in access to care, among other topics.
Working knowledge of common campus-specific and other computer application programs.
Solid communication and interpersonal skills to communicate effectively with all levels of staff, both verbally and in writing.
Solid ability to multi-task with demanding timeframes.
Ability to use discretion and maintain all confidentiality.
Ability to use sound judgment in responding to issues and concerns.
Working skills to analyze information and synthesize large amounts of data with strong attention to detail.
Experience managing community outreach programs for underserved populations;
Computer literacy across applications, specifically MS Office Suite, FilemakerPro, Adobe Creative Suite (namely: Adobe InDesign and Adobe Illustrator), email, and Internet.
Active listening, critical thinking, multi-task and time management skills.
Understanding of health policy trends, and knowledge of underserved communities.
Ability to communicate clearly and effectively, both orally and in writing, at various levels (with community-based organization members as well as with high-ranking elected officials, academics, and the business sector).
Ability to problem solve and troubleshoot.
Minimum of 2 years working in an office environment.
Ability to participate in occasional travel within CA outside of normal working hours.
Experience supervising subordinates (workstudy students) and delegating tasks to meet deadlines.
Bilingual in English and Spanish.
Bachelor's degree in Social Science, Public Health, or other related area and/or equivalent experience/training.
