JOB DESCRIPTION SUMMARY
The Foisie Innovation Studio (FIS) Makerspace is an open, welcoming, and engaging student-driven space where students of all skill levels and disciplines can create, develop and implement their ideas according to both their project needs and desire for innovative exploration.

The FIS Makerspace Manager is responsible for overseeing and facilitating all activities in the Makerspace. They will engage the WPI community, including faculty and staff, in FIS Makerspace services and workshops. This includes the delivery of courses, the development and implementation of training workshops, outreach programs, as well as working with students on projects that may be from classes, competitions, or entrepreneurial efforts .

This includes the delivery of courses, the development and implementation of training workshops, outreach programs, as well as working with students on projects that may be from classes, competitions, or entrepreneurial efforts .

JOB DESCRIPTION
PRINCIPAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Proactively engage and coordinate with faculty and staff regarding the incorporation of the FIS Makerspace services with academic courses
  • Lead the implementation of instructional workshops and crash courses to introduce students to new design and production concepts
  • Create and schedule programming and events to engage students and facilitate student-driven initiatives by encouraging involvement by all students in the space
  • Formally evaluate programming and initiatives and provide regular updates
  • Develop training protocols for work study students staffing the Makerspace Information Desk, ensuring that student workers can direct lab users and visitors appropriately
  • Develop procedures for student access to and allocation of project storage in the Makerspace
  • Manage the materials and small tools inventory, excluding rapid prototyping supplies
  • Optimizing makerspace operations by implementing and evaluating software solutions to ensure efficient workflows.
  • Recruiting and hiring student staff and coordinating student volunteers to help support the makerspaces and related activities.
  • Working with students, faculty, and staff in outreach activities.


REQUIREMENTS:
  • Master's Degree with 10+ years of demonstrated experience in design and/or manufacturing, or
  • Master's Degree in Engineering/related field with 5+ years of experience
  • Self-starter, reliable, motivated in one's work, with a demonstrated ability to work in a dynamic team environment
  • 3+ years lab management required
  • Ability to network effectively within and outside of WPI, including but not limited to relevant companies and other academic institutions
  • Strong time management skills and ability to coordinate multiple workshops and sessions to engage the WPI community with the Makerspace
  • Attention to detail; strong research and assessment skills
  • Ability to work in a rapidly changing environment
  • Previous experience with, and knowledge of, one or more of:
  • Mechanical design, fabrication, testing, and troubleshooting.
  • Woodshop and/or metalshop equipment.
  • Programming and software development, particularly as suited to programming microcontrollers and other mechatronics systems.
  • The use and maintenance of electronics testing and assembly equipment including: soldering, multimeters, oscilloscopes, breadboarding; ideally also circuit board design also surface mount soldering.
  • Software to design and specify 2D and 3D designs (e.g., Illustrator, Inkscape, Fusion 360, Solidworks, OpenScad, SketchUp).
  • Process development, prototyping, and/or other relevant design experience.
  • Experience teaching and working with students in both formal and informal settings; ideally experience training them to safely and effectively use makerspace equipment.
  • Supervisory experience in a college/university setting, preferably of a student or research shop.
  • Ability to execute multiple projects, meet scheduled milestones, and meet deliverables on time with high quality outputs.
  • Organizational and budgeting skills to run a shop, prioritize work, handle multiple requests simultaneously from a broad range of customers.
  • Process development, prototyping, and/or other relevant design experience.
  • Strong oral and written communication skills.
  • Strong interpersonal and leadership skills.
  • Artistic interest and experience.


PHYSICAL DEMANDS:
Required to stand, walk and sit; talk or hear, both in person and by telephone; use hands to finger, handle or feel objects or controls; reach with hands and arms. Regularly required to stoop, kneel, bend, crouch and lift up to 40 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, depth perception, color vision and the ability to adjust focus.
