Overview
The Office of the Vice Provost of Research (OVPR) at Tufts University provides the key services necessary to deliver exceptional results in research. The OVPR strives to provide high quality services to faculty and staff and to increase the funding available to support research and scholarship, all the while protecting the University’s interests and ensuring that Tufts is in compliance with all relevant laws and regulations.
The Institutional Animal Care & Use Committee (IACUC) ensures institutional compliance with federal regulations that govern animal care and use for all research, teaching, and training projects.
What You'll Do
This is a hybrid position. The expectation is that the day-to-day work can primarily be conducted remotely (about 75%). On-site work is required for semiannual inspections, on all campuses with animal research (Medford, Boston, and Grafton), occurring throughout the year (can range from 1-4 times/month). On site work also includes participation in AAALAC accreditation site visits (3 separate units), annual USDA inspections, post-approval monitoring activities, teaching/training sessions, etc.
Reporting to the Assistant Director of Regulatory Programs, IACUC, this position involves administering, and/or managing oversight and compliance committee activities related to animal research. The IACUC Analyst II works with minimal supervision to provide experienced compliance support for researchers, students, and educators that use animals for research, teaching, and training overseen by the Institutional Care and Use Committee.
- Pre-reviews and assists in writing research, teaching, and training protocols to ensure the University’s animal care and use program is in compliance with institutional policies and federal, state, and local regulations, and the ethical principles regarding activities related to animal research.
- Administers the IACUC review and approval process, providing guidance for investigators and other stakeholders, performing grant congruency reviews, conducting inspections of animal use areas, and training of investigative and administrative staff.
- Applies research compliance professional concepts to routine and complex research protocols; applies animal welfare federal regulations, state regulations, and University policies to protocol review; and documents campus compliance with regulatory and policy standards.
- Participates in and/or administratively supports major programmatic components of the IACUC (e.g. protocol approvals, inspections, occupational health and safety, post approval monitoring).
- Participates in the development and revision of office procedures, IACUC policies, and other guidelines for the care and use of animals.
- Communicates with researchers and provides guidance pre- and post-submission on how to resolve particular issues and meet requirements of external regulatory bodies; and properly documents these actions in accordance with all applicable laws, regulations, policies, and procedures.
- Participates in educational outreach and training of individuals and departments on animal research regulations, IACUC processes, forms, and policies.
- Participates in general administrative support of office with customer service (e.g. general email, answering phone calls, full committee meeting support).
- Advises the IACUC Analyst I on the completion of their duties.
What We're Looking For
Basic Requirements:
- Knowledge and experience typically acquired through the completion of a Bachelor’s degree and 2+ years of IACUC regulatory experience, with basic knowledge of federal, state and local regulations pertaining to the use of animals in research
- Certified Professional IACUC Administrator (CPIA) OR eligible and willing to obtain CPIA
- Proficiency with computers, e.g. Microsoft Word, Excel, Access, PowerPoint, Adobe Acrobat, Topaz Elements
- Ability to follow the guidelines, policies, and procedures of the institutions and to facilitate compliance of others with these regulatory requirements
- Excellent written, verbal, and interpersonal skills, including teamwork, leadership, motivational, and negotiating skills, professional demeanor, customer service orientation, and ability to overcome adversarial interactions in a diplomatic manner
- Keen attention to detail and excellent organizational skills with demonstrated ability to multi-task efficiently, meet deadlines, and respond to ad hoc requests in a timely manner
- Ability to work with confidential information and/or issues using discretion and judgment
Preferred Qualifications:
- Basic knowledge of issues pertaining to the use and care of animals in research, testing, and instruction
- Prior experience performing a variety of techniques with laboratory animal species
- Work productively and be capable of functioning independently with minimal supervision
- Strong teaching skills, including program development, presentation, and demonstration skills; and ability to engage an audience, raise consciousness, inspire compliance, and overcome language, cultural, and attitude barriers
- Ability to communicate with all levels of faculty and staff within the institutions in an accurate, concise, helpful, and customer service-oriented manner
- Capable of learning new task and functions quickly, accurately, and efficiently as new projects arise
