The Global Engagement Office facilitates and coordinates global engagement at UC Berkeley by:
- Serving as a central hub for global activity and clearinghouse for international resources.
- Bridging international conversations across campus through the International Activities Coordination Group (IACG) and the Berkeley International Group (BIG).
- Liaising with international partners to facilitate engagement with campus units.
- Hosting and connecting international delegations to UC Berkeley faculty and staff.
- Advising units on best practices and guidelines to ensure the success and sustainability of international partnerships.Serving as a central hub for global activity and clearinghouse for international resources.
- Assists with negotiations, plans, and facilitations of visits to campus by international partners. Coordinates meeting or events logistics between institutional and outside constituencies. Liaises with international institutions, governments, and their representatives to arrange the aspects of the visit. May guide general campus tours for international delegations or serve as a campus tour guide for targeted constituencies, requiring specialized skills such as in-depth knowledge of campus history, architecture, and/or handling important campus visitors.
- Represents UC Berkeley to international constituencies and scan for opportunities that advance Berkeley's strategy in the global arena. Involves activities associated with reaching, serving, and engaging external global and internal campus constituencies through organized delegation visits, programs, events, products, and services not related to fundraising. Constituencies include international partners (and potential partners), local, state, federal, and international government agencies, campus faculty, departments, and entities that are associated with (or could potentially be associated with) international partners, as well as the general public.
- Gathers, compiles, and summarizes issues, policies, and topics; provides background information, talking points, and briefing materials for the Vice Provost, the Chancellor, and the EVCP and other members of the senior administration. Prepares confidential reports for senior staff, system-wide and other officials. Provides advice to faculty, academic and research units, and administrative offices on where to locate current international policies and best practices.
- May provide front-line customer service to campus visitors and answer routine inquiries, including questions received on-line via the internet. Prepares and/or assists in preparing written and visual materials.
- Assists with International Protocol for the UC Berkeley campus. This position will assist in maintaining Berkeley's reputation among international universities, government agencies, and similar institutions.
- Assists in the maintenance of the database on international MOUs and assists in creation maintaining and storing of non-binding agreements and MOUs.
- Thorough knowledge of basic concepts, principles, and procedures of building and maintaining effective relations with internal campus and external global constituencies.
- Thorough knowledge or ability to learn of the campus, its mission, goals, objectives, programs, achievements, infrastructure, and issues of concern.
- Thorough written, verbal and interpersonal communications, tact, and political acumen to effectively represent the campus.
- Political acumen and sensitivities to the differing perspectives and political circumstances within all level of the campus and external constituencies.
- Effective research, analytical and critical thinking skills, including sound judgment and decision-making skills and skill to correctly identifying real and potential problems, advising management as required, and proposing effective, strategic resolutions.
- Demonstrated skills with event planning with ability to work autonomously and with others to achieve program goals.
- Analytical /problem solving skills.
- Ability to multi-task.
- Ability to use high-level of discretion and maintain a high level of confidentiality.
- Familiarity with government officials and their roles.
- Knowledge of international protocol and the practice of diplomacy. Preferred experience working with international students, administrators, and faculty.
- Knowledge of world geography and international university rankings.
- Bachelor's degree in related area and/or equivalent experience/training.
- Some experience writing press releases and public affairs announcements preferred.
Salary & Benefits
This is a non-exempt, hourly paid position within the range of $26.34 - $33.52 per hour, commensurate with experience.
