Primary Function
The Assistant Director of Events reports directly to the Senior Events Administrator. This position is responsible for the development, marketing and management of Alumni Association and NIU Foundation events, and provides a wide range of full-service event planning support for all related events. The Assistant Director of Events interacts with alumni, donors, and prospects on a consistent basis in promotion of Northern Illinois University, NIU Foundation and the NIU Alumni Association.

Duties and Responsibilities (generally)
This position is responsible for facilitating and organizing all events for the Alumni Association and Foundation events, including ensuring all amenities, accommodations and related aspects are arranged, including but not limited to site selection, staffing, food and beverage selection, transportation, and audio or visual equipment.

Minimum Required Qualifications for this position
1. Bachelor’s degree in Hospitality, Marketing, Public Relations, Communications, Business Administration, Student Affairs, or a closely related field.
2. Three (3) years of professional work experience in Events Planning, Conference Management, Public Relations, Communications, Marketing, or any other related field.

Education and Experience Preferred
1. Bachelor’s degree in Hospitality, Marketing, Public Relations, Communications, Business Administration, Student Affairs, or a closely related field.
2. One (1) year of nonprofit work experience, specifically related to Foundations or Alumni events
3. Certification as a CMP (Certified Meeting Professional)

1. Ability to address requests for proposal development, vendor evaluations, contract negotiations, and management and implementation of new technology.
2. Ability to track financial expenditures and maintain budgets is required.
3. Demonstrable skills in effective interpersonal relations and communication.
4. Ability to work on project teams both in lead and support roles.
5. Business proficiency in Microsoft Office Word, Access and Excel, including the tabulation of budget figures, creation of scenario planning tools and merging files; experience in enterprise systems for event and scheduling management.
6. Exceptional organizational and project management skills.
7. Excellent attention to detail.
8. Exceptional communication skills as there will be strong interactions with both internal and external constituents.
9. The ability to synthesize multiple sources of information
10. Ability to travel for evening, weekend and overnight events in/out of state.
11. Willingness to work extra hours, nights and weekends to ensure the job is done exceptionally well.
12. Ability to work autonomously, as well as manage several constituents.
13. Demonstrated exceptional writing skills.
14. Ability to track financial expenditures and maintain budgets.
