The Berkeley Division of the Academic Senate represents Berkeley faculty in the shared governance of the University of California. The Academic Senate is empowered by the Regents to determine academic policy, set conditions for admission and granting of degrees, advise the Chancellor on the campus budget, authorize and supervise courses and curricula, and advise the administration on faculty appointments, promotions, and budgets.
The Committee on Courses of Instruction (COCI) meets biweekly during the academic year to consider course proposals, variance requests, and matters pertaining to courses of instruction.
This role involves analytical studies on a variety of policies, projects, programs and issues in support of the Committee on Courses of Instruction (COCI) and other committees of the Academic Senate.
- Provides administrative support to the Committees on Courses of Instruction (COCI) and other Senate committees as assigned.
- Provides analyses for adherence of course approval forms to complex Academic Senate course regulations and procedures. Researches and analyzes processes, procedures, policies, and organizational structures in order to develop and/or implement changes and to provide consultative services regarding course approval policies and processes to COCI members, faculty, and department administrators.
- Develops proposals and recommendations to guide and support a broader strategic direction for COCI and other Academic Senate committees. Performs ad hoc, analytical studies on policies, programs, and issues relating to courses of instruction, which are complex in nature. Conducts post-implementation analysis to determine the need for further enhancements, finer distinctions, and/or additional process/policy components.
- Prepares directives and other instructions for issuance to departments. Coordinates implementation with departments as needed. Coordinates efforts with a variety of external and internal contacts.
- Serves as primary Senate representative on Course Management System (CMS) team, working with IT developers and other administrators to report bugs, test solutions, and improve system functionality. Represents the Senate in courses area for Student Information Systems.
- Monitors and analyzes changes in course regulations, legislation, and UC policies for impact on the Campus. Proposes, leads, and/or participates on policy and planning committees and working groups. Researches and drafts complex proposals, reports, and briefings.
- As a member of the Academic Senate Office team, participates in activities relating to the Senate as a whole, such as Division Meetings. Assists colleagues by providing backup, cross-training, and other office support as needed. Participates in professional development activities as assigned or of interest.
- Experience working with academic policies and academic courses of instruction in an analytical or applied capacity.
- Exceptional analytical/problem-solving skills, particularly the ability to understand and apply academic policies, identify issues and alternatives, and recommend appropriate action.
- Strong communication and interpersonal skills to communicate effectively with faculty and all levels of staff, both verbally and in writing.
- Ability to develop positive working relationships with faculty, administrators, staff, and students.
- Strong organizational skills and keen attention to detail, including the ability to successfully track multiple items to their conclusion while adhering to deadlines.
- Ability to use discretion and maintain confidentiality.
- Excellent judgment and keen political acumen in a politically-charged environment.
- Strong computer skills and technical aptitude to liaise with campus IT partners.
- Bachelor's degree in related area and/or equivalent experience/training.
- Knowledge of or demonstrated ability to learn Academic Senate and Berkeley Division bylaws and regulations, and Committee on Courses of Instruction (COCI) procedures.
- Experience with or demonstrated ability to learn UCB's Course Management System (CMS).
- Experience working with academic courses of instruction in a higher education setting.
Salary & Benefits
This is an exempt, monthly paid position. Annual salary is commensurate with experience within the range of $60,800.00 - $74,000.00.
