Overview
Cummings School of Veterinary Medicine at Tufts provides 24-hour care for pets 365 days of the year. Since 1985 we have offered high quality medical care, consultation, referral, and emergency veterinary services for the care of dogs, cats and exotic pets. We are currently hiring a Veterinary Technician to be an intrinsic member of our anesthesia department providing excellence in care to our small animal hospital. The Anesthesia department has over 30 years of experience managing routine to critical cases for surgery, advanced imaging and state of the art procedures. With the opportunity to work with Anesthesiologists and VTS level technicians we welcome applicants of all skill levels and will provide training and mentorship to help you achieve your personal goals
What You'll Do
As a technician on the anesthesia team, you will perform anesthesia of all kinds, manage a busy and diverse caseload as well as support and teach veterinary students. The technician accurately assesses and reports changes in patient parameters and works with students and clinicians on appropriate intervention. The Veterinary Technician III performs advanced and more specialized technical procedures with limited direct supervision from the attending veterinarian or a supervising technician. Under minimal supervision, the Veterinary Technician III makes decisions and provides advanced veterinary patient nursing care, respecting the directions of the attending veterinarian. Coaches and mentors junior staff and provide on-the-job training to new technicians. Teaches and supervises veterinary and technician students performing more advanced technical skills and nursing care.
The Veterinary Technician is considered an essential employee within the hospital and the schedule may include providing University and calendar holiday coverage on a rotating basis.
As a Vet Tech III, Anesthesia you will:
- Assessment and anesthetic management of patients ranging from stable to critical from induction, throughout procedure, through to recovery.
- Provide care to patients and support to co-workers and students that are consistent with hospital standards of minimizing fear, anxiety, stress and pain in our patients.
- Monitor, manage and implement treatment plans as ordered by clinicians to insure prompt delivery of high-quality patient care.
- Independently perform advanced technical tasks without supervision
- Collaborate with administrative and clinical care team members throughout the hospital to coordinate and prioritize patient care.
- Complete diagnostic testing as ordered by clinicians including bench-top lab tests.
- Clinical instruction of basic and more advanced anesthesia protocols and procedures for veterinary students, interns, residents and student technicians throughout anesthesia rotation.
- Assist in training, orienting, and mentoring new veterinary technicians in all aspects of the service.
- Engage students to ensure they are receiving a successful and fulfilling education in the department.
- Cleaning and stocking of supplies and equipment in all areas of the small animal hospital for which anesthesia is responsible.
- Maintain adequate inventory of medical supplies and pharmaceuticals.
- Facilitate the maintenance of clinical equipment by identifying malfunctioning equipment and scheduling service.
- Provide coverage for other shifts and sections of the hospital as needed.
- Participate in service and hospital-wide initiatives as required.
- Assist faculty with ongoing research projects.
- Clinical instruction of advanced and critical care anesthesia protocols and procedures for veterinary students, interns, residents and student technicians throughout anesthesia rotation.
- Instruct veterinary students and student technicians in technical and nursing aspects of patient care.
- Engage students to ensure they are receiving a successful and fulfilling education in the department
- May be asked to participate in provision of formal CE training.
- Serve as a mentor for newly hired veterinary technicians and facilitate the on-boarding process in collaboration with supervisor.
- Demonstrate excellent leadership skills, resourcefulness, and self-accountability.
- Cleaning and stocking of supplies and equipment in all areas of the hospital for which anesthesia is responsible.
- Complete projects as assigned by supervisor.
- Facilitate the maintenance of clinical equipment by identifying malfunctioning equipment and scheduling service.
- Provide coverage for other shifts and sections of the Hospital as needed.
- Participate in Departmental and Hospital-wide initiatives as required
- Assist in studies and projects as needed including treating research/laboratory animals
What We're Looking For
Basic Requirements:
- Mastery of advanced technical and procedural skills in anesthesia and critical care monitoring
- Certified Veterinary Technician in good standing
- Associate OR bachelor's degree from an AVMA-accredited institution providing training in veterinary technology, veterinary nursing, or veterinary science or degree in a related field.
- A minimum of 3 years of experience as a certified veterinary technician in a University Hospital or in a similar environment
- Demonstrated ability to work independently when conducting complex tasks, with minimal supervision.
- Exceptional interpersonal and communication skills with the ability to work effectively as a member of a diverse team of clinical and administrative professionals.
- Highly motivated, enthusiastic self-starter with a professional attitude.
- Excellent understanding of medical terminology and veterinary pharmacology, including knowledge of and ability to identify adverse drug reactions.
- Demonstrated ability to provide exceptional service to both internal and external customers, and to work collegially as part of a team.
- Demonstrated ability to instruct students, as determined by student feedback.
- Experience with Microsoft Office and electronic medical record systems
- Required technical skills include:
- Specialized technical skills related to anesthesia for stable and critical patients or demonstrated ability to learn such skills within 3 months.
- Be able to independently initiate steps to perform CPR in absence of an attending veterinarian
- Ability to lift up to 50 lbs with or without accommodation
Preferred qualifications:
- Demonstrated leadership skills and resourcefulness.
- Able to work well independently as well as part of a team.
- Ability to work in a busy, stressful environment with diverse personalities while maintaining a calm, professional demeanor.
- 3 years dedicated anesthesia experience in a busy, fast-paced hospital; small or large animal
- Veterinary Technician Specialist level skillset in anesthesia
- Experience teaching other technicians, veterinary students, veterinary technician students
- Fear Free Certification
- RECOVER Certification
- Large Animal anesthesia experience
Pay Range
Minimum $29.10, Midpoint $34.65, Maximum $40.20
Salary is based on related experience, expertise, and internal equity; generally, new hires can expect pay between the minimum and midpoint of the range.
