Departmental Overview

The Department of Music was officially established by the California State Legislature in 1905, with the initial courses - a symphony orchestra, the student chorus and classes in harmony and counterpoint - offered the next year. A connection with the community was made immediately, with free 30-45 minute performances held in the newly-constructed Greek Theater on Sunday afternoons. The present Department presents a picture of both continuity and change from that time. The curriculum now encompasses music of Europe and the Americas, and musics of Japan, India, Indonesia, the Middle East, and the Caribbean. Free forty-five minute performances for the community morphed into our free Wednesday Noon Concert Series, as well as a full roster of evening and weekend concerts by excellent student ensembles presented in Hertz Hall.

In the intervening century-plus since its founding, the Department has grown greatly. Today it comprises an instructional program with roughly 160 majors and 65 graduate students taught by 20 full-time faculty, a roster of distinguished Bay Area artists offering individual musical instruction, and a staff of 8 professional, personable individuals, four buildings, the Jean Gray Hargrove Music Library, the Center for New Music and Audio Technology and numerous other resources. Through its courses and concerts the department reaches out to hundreds of students from other departments, to its many alumni, and to the general public.

Responsibilities
  • Management, planning, and analysis of all Department funds, including numerous Regents and UC Foundation endowments, grants, awards, research funds, and program funds.
  • Prepare reports, statements, long-range projections, and department budget requests, including Temporary Academic Salaries.
  • Ensure faculty has information needed to make decisions regarding use of their funds.
  • Facilitate lecturer, student instructor and reader hires.
  • Maintain current information on all academic personnel policies, procedures, and practices, including Academic Personnel Manual, Academic Senate regulations, Unit 18 contract provisions for approximately 45 lecturers and Teacher of Special Programs staff, Letters & Science policies, and various University or Campus policies such as affirmative action guidelines, access to records, leave policy, immigration guidelines, etc.
  • Consults with Chair on pending actions.
  • Liase with Berkeley Regional Services as needed regarding personnel actions.
  • Work with department staff to maintain and develop the private lessons instructional program.
  • Maintain integrity of department through management and oversight of department staff.
  • Organize and delegate staff responsibilities.
  • Monitor workflow and consult regularly with staff through staff meetings and as needed on day-to-day issues.
  • Write job descriptions and recommends classifications. Hire, train, and supervise department staff, including technical and professional positions.
  • Prepare performance evaluations and recommend merit increases, disciplinary actions.
  • Provide staff with moral support, job training, and professional development opportunities.
  • Make decisions on administrative or operational matters and ensure achievement of operation's objectives (operational and budget processes, academic and/or staff FTE, finance, human resources, IT, student services, development, events, intellectual property, and space planning) that have department-wide impact.
  • Manage, plan and administer operations of the Department of Music administrative services through oversight of Department facilities, maintenance and repair of all instructional, research, performance and teaching spaces: 1) Carillon Program Sather Towers, 2) Morrison Hall 3) Hertz Hall, 4) Jean Gray Hargrove Music Library seminar room, and 5) CNMAT Music Pedagogy program teaching spaces.
  • Interact with higher-level management on controversial situations, customer negotiations, or influencing and persuading others.
  • Formulate administrative policies and guidelines to carry out the department's mission for faculty and students.
  • Develop, modify, and execute campus policies which affect immediate operation(s).
  • Oversee rental agreements of Department space and equipment.
  • Work with Chair and Student Services Advisors on curriculum planning each year, ensuring submission of course approval requests and program changes through appropriate channels.
  • Represents the department at campus meetings (examples include Arts & Humanities Managers meetings, L&S Managers meetings.)
  • Attends faculty meetings.
  • Produces minutes of the meetings for the chair.
  • Other duties as assigned.


Required Qualifications
  • Excellent ability to establish metrics for department and employee goals.
  • Excellent project management skills, including the capability of managing capital projects.
  • Excellent skills to work collaboratively and act persuasively in sensitive situations; skills in conflict management techniques.
  • Thorough knowledge of financial analysis and reporting techniques; human resources and risk management planning; accounting and payroll.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills to effectively lead, motivate and influence others and develop and maintain high standards of customer service.
  • Thorough knowledge of or ability to learn common campus-specific and other computer application programs.
  • Strong ability to quickly evaluate complex issues and identify multiple options for resolution.
  • Knowledge of music in a large university environment or similar arts organization that includes substantial performance program, including ensembles and individual instruction, alongside teaching and research.
  • Bachelor's degree in related area and/or equivalent experience/training.


Salary & Benefits

This is an exempt, monthly paid position. Annual salary is commensurate with experience up to $125,000.00.
