Departmental Overview

The Almeida Lab's mission is to conduct research and provide academic training on the ecology of emerging plant diseases. We believe that it is possible to concurrently develop novel research ideas and concepts and generate results that are relevant to disease-impacted stakeholders.

Our research tools and approaches range from field experiments and disease surveys to greenhouse experimental manipulations, as well as the functional characterization of pathogen genes involved in pathogen-vector-plant interactions and studies on pathogen diversity and evolution. This holistic approach, in our view, is necessary to successfully integrate fundamental science findings and translate that knowledge into real-world practical solutions; in other words, we attempt to bridge fundamental and applied sciences to address current and emerging disease problems.

The SRA will manipulate live bacteria, plants, and insects associated with the fastidious plant pathogen under a range of conditions. Including processing field collected plant samples for fastidious bacterial culturing using microbiological approaches and molecular tools, data processing and standard python coding for handling of genomic data. The purpose of the position is to initiate and gather initial data on outbreaks of an almond plant disease in California.

Responsibilities
  • Processing and preparation of fastidious bacterial cultures from field samples to materials ready for genome sequencing and live cell storage.
  • Python coding supporting ongoing genomics project
  • Maintenance of insect, plant, and bacterial colonies in the laboratory and greenhouse facility.
  • General laboratory management activities

Required Qualifications
  • Experience culturing fastidious grapevine bacterial pathogens from plant samples, experience with DNA extraction and qPCR for grapevine bacterial pathogen detection, usage of Python for computational genomic tools in the context of bacterial pathogens.
  • Candidates are expected to possess the skills, knowledge, and abilities essential to the successful performance of the duties assigned to the position. These skills, knowledge, and abilities are typically acquired through a combination of extensive study and experience.

Preferred Qualifications
  • Experience handling plants, insects, and bacteria, electron and light microscopy experience, excellent organizational skills, ability to work well independently and in groups.
