Departmental Overview

Berkeley Public Health (BPH) aims to improve population health, especially for the most vulnerable, through interdisciplinary collaborations, preeminent education, and transformational research. Established in 1943, BPH is a professional school on the UC Berkeley campus that comprises six academic divisions and nearly 30 research centers and programs. SafeTREC Overview:

The UC Berkeley Safe Transportation Research and Education Center (SafeTREC) was established in 2000 as the Traffic Safety Center (TSC) to address the fact that motor vehicle crashes are a leading cause of death for people aged 1 to 34 in the U.S.-and a major cause of minor and debilitating injuries for all age groups. SafeTREC's mission is to inform decision-making and empower communities to improve roadway safety for all. The center is funded by a combination of contracts and grants from federal and state agencies and private foundations.

Responsibilities

Under supervision from SafeTREC Leads, develops and implements communications activities designed to enhance the public's understanding and appreciation of SafeTREC's research, programming, education, and public service.

  • Researches and monitors transportation safety outlets at federal, state and local level to inform communications on SafeTREC websites and social media;
  • Assists with development and monitoring of communications/social media plans;
  • Develops, publishes, and maintains web content, graphics, visual, audio, and digital assets;
  • Integrates best practices for communications/social media.


Assists in researching, preparing, and publishing news/information about SafeTREC and its programs for dissemination through the media, internet, and relevant institutional components.

  • Responds to media requests;
  • Coordinates and maintains contacts with internal/external partners;
  • Monitors and evaluates effectiveness of dissemination of news and digital content.


Collaborates on the design and publication of SafeTREC outreach, research, and education materials across multiple grants.

  • Functions well in a team setting;
  • Responds to give and take of project needs;
  • Utilizes knowledge of project management skills.


Participates in workshops, trainings, and other professional development activities.

  • Completes other duties, as assigned.


Required Qualifications

  • Basic knowledge of concepts and principles of effectively communicating across a variety of news, digital, and social media communications platforms.
  • Experience using communications tools such as Adobe Creative Suite/Cloud (InDesign, Photoshop, Illustrator, Premier), Microsoft Office Suite, Mailchimp or Constant Contact, Google Drive, Canva, Google Suite, Drupal, Wordpress, etc.
  • Good written, verbal, interpersonal communication skills, political acumen, and ability to maintain confidentiality.
  • Good organizational and project management skills.
  • Skills in graphic design, video editing, audio editing, and ensuring digital accessibility.
  • Experience developing social media, outreach, and website communications content.
  • Basic knowledge of communications, public health, and/or transportation concepts.


Education/Training:

  • Bachelor's degree in related area and / or equivalent experience / training.


Preferred Qualifications

  • Basic knowledge of and/or ability to learn SafeTREC, including its achievements, mission, vision, goals, objectives, research, education, programs, and infrastructure.

Under California law, the University of California, Berkeley is required to provide a reasonable estimate of the compensation range for this role and should not offer a salary outside of the range posted in this job announcement. This range takes into account the wide range of factors that are considered in making compensation decisions including but not limited to experience, skills, knowledge, abilities, education, licensure and certifications, analysis of internal equity, and other business and organizational needs. It is not typical for an individual to be offered a salary at or near the top of the range for a position. Salary offers are determined based on final candidate qualifications and experience.

The budgeted hourly range that the University reasonably expects to pay for this position is $33.75 - $39.50 ($70,470.00 - $82,476.00 annually). The full pay scale range for this position classification is $30.84 - $54.02 ($64,393.92 - $112,793.76 annually).

  • This is a 18-month, 100%, full-time (40 hours per week), contract position that is eligible for full UC benefits with the possibility of extension.
  • This position is non-exempt and bi-weekly.
