Departmental Overview

The UC Berkeley Library is an internationally renowned research and teaching facility at one of the nation's premiere public universities. In a highly-diverse and intellectually-rich environment, Berkeley serves a campus community of 30,000 undergraduate students, 1,000 graduate students, and 2,000 faculty. The Library comprises 25 campus libraries - including the Doe/Moffitt Libraries, the Bancroft Library, the C. V. Starr East Asian Library and subject specialty libraries. With a collection of more than 11 million volumes and a collections budget of over $15 million, the Library offers extensive collections in all formats and robust services to connect users with those collections and build their related research skills. The Library has a current operations budget of approximately $62 million with approximately 325 FTE employees and 600 student employees hired throughout the academic year and summer.

The Doe- Moffitt Libraries are the primary libraries for humanities and social sciences on the UC Berkeley campus. The Library Security Unit provides security to the Doe-Moffitt Complex, including Bancroft Library, CV starr East Asian Library, and extends support to the 22 Subject Specialty Libraries across the campus.


Reporting to the Head of Library Security, the Security Supervisor directs and supervises security personnel to enforce library and campus policies and California State laws applicable to libraries. The position is responsible for managing the safety and security program and for guarding university property to protect people, prevents theft, violence, or infraction of rules. The position supervises the protection of University property with a high intrinsic or monetary value such as rare books, manuscripts and artifacts, and high risk areas such as exhibits, open and art displays.

  • Duties assigned to security personnel by the supervisor include providing directional/informational assistance to students, staff faculty, library users from the general public, and visitors, as well as assisting with crowds and traffic at public events.
  • The supervisor is responsible for creating the workflow for all interactions with UCPD as needed and consults with UCPD Crime Prevention Unit and acts as liaison with the campus Police.
  • The supervisor manages the operation and maintenance of the electronic security system, conducts weekly audit/review of alarm activations & camera recordings for any anomalies and ensures the alarm and camera devices are properly functioning.
  • The supervisor investigates incidents and complaints, conducts follow up investigations, reviews daily activity reports and responds to issues noted accordingly. The position establishes a flexible, viable and continuous program of crime prevention, education and coordination between the Library Security Unit, staff, students, faculty and patrons. The position ensures high quality public relations with all persons visiting the libraries.
  • The supervisor controls public safety rule infractions and irregularities in the libraries. The supervisor maintains prominent presence in the libraries to deter criminal activity.
  • The position acts as Facilities Manager in absence of the incumbent.

Required Qualifications

  • Excellent inter-personal skills for dealing with subordinate staff, other Library employees, regular Library patrons as well as disruptive individuals visiting the Library.
  • Must be committed to a high level of public service.
  • Demonstrated expertise in the professional treatment of persons who threaten the safety of people and the orderly research environment of the Library.
  • Demonstrated effective management skills, experience in training and supervising security personnel.
  • Demonstrated effective oral and written communication skills.
  • Must have proficient computer skills and experience in the operation and applications related to electronic security systems (e.g. The Software House, C-cure 800/900 Alarm and CCTV - Installed Unit Genentech camera software, web base staff scheduling system.
  • Must have the availability to work flexible hours.

Preferred Qualifications

  • At least 5 years experience in the field of security or equivalent.
  • Security guard state license (BSIS) and safety training certificate.
  • Certification in First Aid, CPR and AED.
  • Certificate of Training in C-cure Alarm and CCTV security system.
  • Security guard supervisory experience in a university library environment.

Salary & Benefits

The annual salary range of the position is $46,100 - $66,200, commensurate with experience.
