Position Summary
In keeping with the President’s commitment to Tuskegee University demonstrating "One Tuskegee," the ideal Undergraduate  Academic Advising Specialist will be able to assist in the daily operations and management of the Title Ill Part 8 (HBCU) and in alignment with the Office of the President.

Essential Job Duties and Responsibilities

Campus-wide Academic Advising and Transfer Credits Processing
Essential duties include advising students on academic policies, procedures, and issues; guiding students in developing and managing a comprehensive educational plan that integrates curricular  and extracurricular activities with academic, career, and personal goals; and supporting the mission of academic advising at Tuskegee University.

Collaborate with academic  units and student  support  area (Office  of Admissions) to ensure the accuracy  of Transfer  Credits  Transmittals for new incoming Freshmen/Transfer students and the timely  submission and approval  of the Transient Student  Form for Returning  students  in accordance with Tuskegee University’s transfer  credit  policies.
Obtain  course  descriptions, catalogs,  and institutional information via web research, online transfer  databases, and contact  other colleges  and universities for the purpose of making  an accurate  course  match.
Ensure that transfer  credit is quickly,  accurately, and completely recorded  in the Student Information System (Colleague), and ensure FERPA  compliance for student/advisor electronic and written  correspondence with regard to academic advising  and transfer credit activities.
Checks for course repetitions  and verify accreditation of other educational institutions attended  by students.
Adheres  to University  and Department  policies,  procedures,  and regulations.


Promotes student development and academic self-efficacy through proactively educating and advising students in addressing developmental tasks (use of available academic enrichment and student support resources).
Monitor and document student progress using University technology (Datatel Colleague, EAB SSC, Blackboard; etc.) Advises students on their academic curricula and makes suggestions based on one-on-one interaction with the student. Assists students with course selection, schedule planning, college and university requirements, and understanding of policies.Ex. Completing courses at Transient Students; re-admission
Participates as an active team member in the programs and academic college related to advisement assignments  to support college and department-level initiatives and builds relationships with faculty, staff, administrators, and other stakeholders.
Develop academic advising programs and conducts related workshops/presentations for students and Faculty Advisors.
Engages in professional development opportunities (Ex. NACADA, FYE, and Transfer Students’ Transition). Produces detailed reports concerning student advisees, their needs, and their progress.
Serves as a resource for faculty and staff in matters related to academic advising services.
Develop a generic academic advising curricula;  monitor and update academic enrichment  and student support services via Blackboard.
Ensure enrollment of freshmen, Transfer (new) and sophomores in Academic Advising Programs and activities.
Monitor  the academic advising email and responding to questions/concerns in a timely manner.
Update and monitor the University’s Academic Advising website.
Creatively design academic advising brochures and flyers for campus-wide distribution. Ensure accurate and timely posting of transfer course credits within Datatel Colleague.


Meet regularly with Faculty Advisor to discuss, plan initiatives and collaborative academic advising efforts.
Assemble  a team  that  will  assist  in resolving  campus-wide  academic  advising  and  transfer  credit  issues which affects students’ retention and persistence towards timely degree completion.
Serve  as a  liaison  to Faculty  Advisors  in the development/improvement of academic  advising  programs and transcript evaluation, assessment and processing.
Collect, analyze, and report  academic advising data and compare  it to internal  benchmarks  and national/peer institution data.
Develop,  maintain and communicate  a complete  list of support services for Faculty  Advisors  to reference when needing academic advising assistance.
Maintains high internal and external customer service standards.
Perform other related duties as assigned.


A Master’s degree from an accredited institution in Education, Psychology, Counseling, Business, or a related field as this position will require teaching courses of instruction.
Knowledge of fundamental concepts, practices, and procedures  in advising is required.
A desire to work with students and assist in their development.
Minimum of two years’ experience working in a fast-paced, service­ focused  setting.
Experience  in an  institution of  higher learning  preferred. Able to adjust schedule  and work  hours during  peak periods.
Experience working with detailed data on a daily basis.
