Departmental Overview

The Departments of Rhetoric, Film and Media, and History of Art are three distinct and distinguished academic units in the Division of Arts and Humanities, located in Dwinelle Hall and in Doe Library. There are currently 42 permanent faculty and 12 permanent staff across the departments. In addition, each department appoints a number of temporary academic staff, including lecturers, adjuncts, and GSIs. History of Art facilities include dedicated classrooms and a Visual Resources Center, which houses a large multi-purpose academic space; Film and Media facilities include dedicated classroom space, a film and video collection, production equipment, and is a member of the Digital Media Lab consortium.

Responsibilities

  • Manages and coordinates the academic review processes (such as merit and promotion cases for faculty), identifying issues relating to policy and compensation.
  • Applies UC policies, campus procedures and collective bargaining agreements to on matters academic personnel.
  • Responsible for the submission and review of personnel actions to ensure that the final decisions are communicated accurately and timely.
  • Review and recommend decisions on academic personnel actions in the areas of recruitment, appointment, non-reappointment, layoff, advancement, compensation, benefits, leaves, misconduct, training and development and other areas as identified.
  • Provides strategic advice and counsel to Department Manager and Department Chairs by analyzing and interpreting system-wide and organization policies, collective bargaining agreements, academic personnel procedures and practices.
  • Applies academic personnel policy, monitor and determine eligibility for advancement, communicate and advise unit head and appointees on case preparation requirements, and review actions to ensure completeness, accuracy and compliance with policy.
  • Work to resolve discrepancies and ensure timely follow-up on requests for additional information and/or resubmission.
  • Maintain confidentiality and exercise discretion in dealing with controversial or sensitive topics.
  • Coordinates the academic search process, including placement of ads, drafting of search plans, and conducting the initial screening of materials submitted.
  • Responsible for the recruitment cycle for the full range academic positions.
  • Manages recruitment and waiver requests academic appointments.
  • Reviews cases to ensure they're in compliance with campus policies and guidelines and are processed expediently.
  • Advise the search committee and unit head on development of search plan and advertisements.
  • Counsels Senate and non-Senate faculty and other academic staff concerning moderate to complex work-related problems.
  • Analyzes and interprets guidelines and policies to provide advice and counsel to unit clients on issues such as compensation, work-eligibility (visa) matters such as H1-B processing or PR application, and benefits considerations.
  • Advise on visa eligibility and procurement, including J-1, H-1B and other visa applications.
  • Identify issues relating to visa eligibility and work with cross-functional departments to resolve moderate to complex issues to facilitate the timely procurement of visas.
  • Develops and maintains communication channel with Dean's Office, attends training sessions on new policies; requests confidential advice. Participates in career and professional development.
  • Identifies and customizes training needs for diverse constituencies.


Required Qualifications

  • Requires thorough knowledge of and ability to apply/interpret organization and college policies and procedures which govern academic HR.
  • Ability to analyze complex management issues, develop project scope and solutions, give professional advice to senior officials and make critical decisions regarding personnel.
  • Ability to communicate effectively with diverse audiences.
  • Excellent critical and innovative thinking to address moderately complex issues and present nuanced analyses.
  • Bachelor's degree in related area and/or equivalent experience/training.


Preferred Qualifications

  • Thorough knowledge of organization and college goals, priorities and values and the legal and human implications of decisions.
  • Thorough knowledge of systemwide and organization policies, union contracts, procedures and practices that govern academic HR administration.
  • Knowledge of trends in academia, especially in areas of academic planning, human resource management and administration.


Salary & Benefits

This is a 50% part-time (20 hrs a week) career position and eligible for UC Benefits.

Under California law, the University of California, Berkeley is required to provide a reasonable estimate of the compensation range for this role and should not offer a salary outside of the range posted in this job announcement. This range takes into account the wide range of factors that are considered in making compensation decisions including but not limited to experience, skills, knowledge, abilities, education, licensure and certifications, analysis of internal equity, and other business and organizational needs. It is not typical for an individual to be offered a salary at or near the top of the range for a position. Salary offers are determined based on final candidate qualifications and experience.

The budgeted salary or hourly range that the University reasonably expects to pay for this position is $74,300.00 - $98,000.00 (salary shown at 100% full-time rate), this is a 50% part-time position.
