The San Mateo County Community College District is home to Caada College, College of San Mateo, and Skyline College. Reporting to the Director of Web Services, the Senior Programmer I performs technical work with responsibility as a project leader for web application programming and project supervision. The position is responsible for detailed design, implementation, and support of secure web applications in accordance with specifications provided. The work involves performing more technical portions of the application programming projects as well as defining, managing, and evaluating the work performed by other staff assigned to these projects. The position is also responsible for implementation, support, and maintenance of third-party vendor software, and to serve as a liaison with end users. The Senior Programmer I interacts with other staff to ensure optimal program performance and efficiency within the web services environment. Consequences of errors in judgment are costly in terms of employee time. Public contact includes ITS staff, college and District users and faculty, members of the public, and software vendors. The Senior Programmer I directs the work of web programmers and other staff. A high degree of independent judgment and creativity are required to resolve many minor and major problems when they occur.
Duties and Responsibilities:
The duties below are representative of the duties of the classification and are not intended to cover all of the duties performed by the incumbent(s) of any particular position. 1. Serves as liaison providing support services for end users, including assistance in the development of production schedules, training documentation, data reports, and operational procedures
2. Manages information technology projects, as required, to implement programming tasks; defines, directs, and evaluates the work of other assigned staff on the projects
3. Develops secure web applications and APIs for complex and critically important portions of the District web services ecosystem
4. Serves as a liaison between the District, third-party software and hardware vendors for product upgrades, problem resolution, and recommended improvements
5. Serves as a resource to web programming staff for guidance in ITS standards and procedures
6. Serves as an ITS representative for District technology committees or task forces as required
7. Performs other related duties as required
A combination of education and experience equivalent to a Bachelors degree in computer science or a closely related field
Demonstrated cultural competence, sensitivity to and understanding of the diverse academic, socioeconomic, cultural, disability, gender identity, sexual orientation, and ethnic backgrounds of community college students, faculty, and staff
This classification requires sitting or standing for prolonged periods of time, dexterity of hands and fingers to operate a computer keyboard, touch screen and mouse.
Equivalence to Minimum Qualifications:
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
1. Knowledge of current full stack web development methods
2. Knowledge of DevOps, Cloud, and application development life-cycle
3. Knowledge and skill in protecting and securing web applications and data
4. Familiarity with user testing and user experience design
5. Problem solving skills with ability to research and recommend technical solutions
6. Ability to design, develop, test, debug, deploy, and support district web software applications
7. Ability to troubleshoot and resolve user issues with third-party web systems
8. Ability to work, support, and communicate with non-technical users
9. Understands the importance of customer service

Please note that the California Education Code requires, in part, that community college districts shall not employ or retain in employment persons in public school service who have been convicted of certain felonies, a misdemeanor drug charge (including alcohol offenses) or misdemeanor moral turpitude (sexual offense) crime. However, consideration may be given to those whose drug convictions occurred more than five years ago. A conviction for other crimes may not necessarily disqualify you from the job for which you may be applying.
