The Position:

The College seeks a full-time, tenure track faculty member to serve as a Head Men's Basketball Coach and Kinesiology Instructor. The ideal candidate will share the College's commitment to educating a racially and socioeconomically diverse student population that takes into account our college's anti-racism framework, magnified support of Black students and student-athletes.
Start date of this assignment: Fall 2021.

Duties and Responsibilities:

The duties below are representative of the duties of the classification and are not intended to cover all of the duties performed by the incumbent(s) of any particular position. The omission of specific statements of duties does not exclude them from the position if the scope of work is similar, related, or a logical assignment to this classification.

1. Perform head basketball coaching assignment including, but not limited to: supervision of athletes, organization of practices, and scheduling of games; creating, managing, and implementing year-round strength and conditioning program; coordination of recruitment and retention of student athletes

2. Represent Caada College by attending CCCAA, Sport Coaches Association, and conference meetings

3. Comply with California Community College Athletic Association (CCCAA) Constitution Bylaws, Rules and Regulations

4. Conduct oversight of the basketball program budget

5. Provide leadership to the overall organization and direction of the mens basketball program

6. Teach a variety of kinesiology activity and lecture courses

7. Direct public relations and fundraising activities in support of the basketball program and the athletic program in general

8. Monitor academic progress of student athletes and serve as liaison to counseling department and other support services

9. Participate in curriculum development, evaluation, and revision, including the assessment of student learning outcomes

10. Serve on division, college, District, and league or conference committees

11. Participate in the development and/or selection of course materials that will enhance offerings of the department and the division

12. Participate in professional development activities

13. Establish liaisons with San Mateo County and contiguous district high school coaches, media, businesses, and potential fundraising opportunities

14. Willingness to leverage and implement a recruiting, marketing, and outreach plan

15. Serve the basketball program and the athletic department in various support roles, such as coordination of athletic mentoring, teaching, tutoring, and fundraising

16. Establish and maintain linkages with other college departments to assist in the coordination of each students academic program and with four-year institutions to assist student athlete transfer

17. Perform other duties as required by contract, collective bargaining agreement, and general institutional needs

18. Recruit, train, and oversee a staff of assistant basketball coaches

19. Work to support hyper-marginalized students, especially in collaboration with instructional support programs, such as COLTS (Community of Learning Through Sports), Umoja, and Puente

Minimum Qualifications:

Masters degree or above in kinesiology, physical education, exercise science, education with an emphasis in physical education, kinesiology, physiology of exercise, or adaptive physical education OR Bachelors degree in any of the above AND Masters degree in any life science, dance, physiology, health education, recreation administration, or physical therapy OR the equivalent

Demonstrated cultural competence, sensitivity to and understanding of the diverse academic, socioeconomic, cultural, disability, gender identity, sexual orientation, and ethnic backgrounds of community college students, faculty, and staff as these factors relate to the need for equity minded-practice both within and outside of the classroom

Possession of a valid California Drivers License (or ability to obtain one)

Degree Equivalence
The applicant possesses a degree(s) with similar content to those listed for the relevant discipline. The name of the degree is close to that specified on the Disciplines List but the degree either has a different title or area of expertise or the coursework is slightly different.
Academic Background Equivalence
Related to disciplines in which a Masters Degree is not generally expected or available. The applicant must have completed at least 24 semester units of coursework in the academic field and must possess at least the equivalent level of achievement and the equivalent in breadth, depth of understanding, and rigor in each of the following:

i) a broad cultural education usually met by the general education requirements for any Bachelors or Associates Degree, and

ii) a detailed study of the discipline in breadth, depth, and rigor, usually met by course work required for the degree major.
Professional Achievement Equivalence
The applicant must have completed the General Education requirements for that degree and show evidence of outstanding professional achievement and/or substantial training in the requested field. The applicant must submit substantial evidence, which demonstrates that his/her preparation, teaching experience, work experience, and ability are equivalent to those expected from a person who meets the minimum qualifications.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

The screening committee will select for interview candidates from among those applicants who, in addition to meeting the minimum requirements, give evidence of any or all of the following:
Subject matter preparation:
Preference will be given to candidates who demonstrate:

1. Evidence of successful experience at the professional, college, or high school level in intercollegiate or interscholastic basketball

2. Evidence of the ability to administer various components of a college basketball program

3. A commitment to following all CCCAA, conference, and college regulations regarding athletic participation and observation of league regulations

4. The ability to create and implement a yearly recruitment plan for in-district, contiguous districts, and first contact student-athletes

5. Computer skills, including word processing, electronic mail, spreadsheet, and database applications.

6. Training in the most up-to-date, high level basketball strategies and the ability to implement them

7. Knowledge of CCCAA Constitution and Bylaws and NCAA transfer requirements
Evidence of outstanding teaching ability that includes:
In addition to practical demonstrations and a written exercise that will be part of the interview process, appropriate evidence includes, but is not limited to, experience, training, or achievement that the candidate has:

8. A commitment to professional responsibilities outside of the classroom through on-going contributions to department, division and college activities

9. The ability to use teaching methods that engage students actively in their own learning and encourage them to become self-regulated learners and develop higher-order thinking skills

10. A commitment to the teaching profession, its goals and ideals, and enthusiasm for the mission of the community college

11. The capacity to reflect on and evaluate ones pedagogy and to use appropriate technology

12. The ability to communicate effectively and work cooperatively with others in a team environment

13. The ability to deliver instruction using strategies designed for diverse learning styles and academic goals

14. Demonstrable knowledge of current literature on basketball and athletic administration

15. Demonstrated skills in writing reports and program information brochures; computer skills that include word-processing, spreadsheet, and database applications

16. Skill in respectful, tactful and sensitive interaction with people who are diverse in their academic, socioeconomic, cultural, disability, gender identity, sexual orientation, and ethnic backgrounds

Preferred Qualifications:

Recent experience working with racially minoritized and other disproportionately-impacted students in the classroom and an understanding of how historical patterns of exclusion of these groups within higher education and particular fields shape patterns of participation and outcomes

Willingness to examine and remediate ones instructional, relational, and classroom practices to more effectively engage and support racially minoritized and other disproportionately impacted students

Experience and skill with addressing inequity in the classroom and on campus

Experience and expertise in culturally-responsive teaching in kinesiology

Demonstrated ability to address equity gaps within kinesiology courses and classrooms

Demonstrated knowledge of the implications of the Hispanic-Serving and Asian American Native American Pacific Islander Institution designations for institutional, departmental and instructional practices

Experience teaching a variety of kinesiology, athletics, and dance (KAD) courses

Experience in designing and implementing learning outcome assessment techniques

Experience with cross campus collaboration

Knowledge of Title IX and the Equity in Athletics Disclosure Act EADA
