Departmental Overview

The Department of Recreational Sports provides competitive and recreational opportunities for students, faculty, staff and the community. Included in the department are 33 sports clubs, intramural sports teams, Cal Adventures Outdoor Programs, and a wide range of additional recreational activities using state of the art equipment. The Aquatic Unit manages daily recreation programming at UC Berkeley's four pools (Golden Bear, Hearst, Spieker & Strawberry Canyon) that are used for instructional swimming classes, group exercise classes, and open recreational swim. Being a lifeguard is one of the most beneficial positions one could have, but it is no easy task. With people's lives in your hands, we have to require that applicants are qualified individuals with the passion and love of swimming and water sports.


Recreational swimming is a major program area at all campus pools. UCB students, staff, faculty, alumni as well as community individuals and their families swim year round at these facilities. The Lifeguard performs duties in the areas of public relations and guest services, enforcing/promoting safety, emergency response, and facility maintenance.

  • Maintain a proper and professional surveillance of the pool and the patrons in and around it. Maintain a high level of concentration and vigilance.
  • Provide information, assistance and service to patrons. Make proper referrals for guests as needed.
  • Resolve conflicts or confrontations with guests. Defuse patron confrontations and customer services issues in a professional manner
  • Enforce safety rules and regulations governing use of swimming areas. Prevent accidents from occurring.
  • Provide Immediate First Aid and Emergency Response Care as needed.

  • Review all manuals and informational items (memos, brochures, flyers, etc.) to provide guests with accurate information.
  • Attend required training courses and staff meetings.
  • Maintain certifications.

Required Qualifications

  • Working knowledge of aquatics / lifeguard activity practices and procedures.
  • Requires verbal and written communication in the English language, active listening, dynamic flexibility, critical thinking, multi-task and time management skills.
  • Able to exercise independent sound judgment and employ reasoning skills.
  • Client service minded.
  • This is a year round position so applicants must be able to work flexible hours including some weekends, school breaks, holidays and the Summer season.

Licenses or certifications:
  • Current American Red Cross certifications includes:

* Lifeguard Training & First Aid
* CPR: For the Professional Rescuer & AED
* Title 22 First Aid (California State Law)

Other Information

  • Pay Rate: $16.16 per hour; non-benefited
  • Work Hours: 10-20 hrs/wk during the semester, and up to 40 hrs/wk during the academic breaks.
  • Shifts: Various shifts available 7 days per week; 5:45am - 9:00pm

Phase 1: Swim Test
  • In phase 1 of the application process, lifeguards will demonstrate their overall competency and physical fitness through a swim test. Lifeguard candidates will be required to demonstrate their life-saving and rescue skills, as well as demonstrate a minimum level of fitness in the water.

Phase 2: Interview
  • If the lifeguard candidate advances to the next phase of the application process, he or she will be invited to an interview with the Aquatics Administration.
