Animal Care Attendant – Hospital for Large Animals – (21001431)
The Animal Care Attendant section supports the Hospital for Large Animals by ensuring a clean and neat environment for all large animal inpatients and outpatients. In addition, the barn staff cares for the TUSVM bovine rumen fluid donor; feeding the animal and maintaining her housing/paddocks. The Animal Care Attendant additionally provides animal handling or technical assistance with patients, as well as with teaching labs. There is direct interaction with clients upon admission and discharge, as well as stall-side.
The Animal Care Attendant will provide quality stable maintenance and nutritional support to all large animal patients who include but are not limited to equines, bovines, caprines, swine, ovines, and camelids. Assist with the preparation of patients for admission and discharge. Assist clients with on-loading and off-loading of patients. Maintain cleanliness and orderliness of stabling and parking areas. Identify needed inventory and maintain barn supplies, such as hay, grain, bedding, and barn equipment. Project a professional and knowledgeable presence to owners and clients.
3 years’ minimum experience in handling of, and working around, large animals. High School diploma or the equivalent. Valid U.S. driver’s license. Basic computer skills. Ability to lift up to 50 lbs. with or without accommodation.
Vocational/technical training or Associates Degree and 3+ years of animal care experience preferred. Experience in trailering and/or vanning horses and possession of a Class I or II driver’s license preferred. Experience in forklift operation preferred. Physical ability and dexterity to handle livestock feed containers, bags of grain, bales of hay and straw required. Ability and dexterity to operate forklifts and waste containers used to handle livestock waste materials. Knowledge of feed and care requirements of various livestock.
Special Work Schedule Requirements:
Schedule is Sunday & Monday 8am-4pm, Tuesday through Thursday 10am-6pm and will include participation in University and calendar holiday coverage. This position is considered essential and is therefore required to report to work as scheduled during emergency closings.
