Departmental Overview

The Office of Environment, Health & Safety's (EH&S) mission is to provide guidance and services to the campus community that promote health, safety, and environmental stewardship.

The Lab Safety Specialist conducts semi-annual multi-disciplinary environmental, health, and safety lab inspections for approximately one-quarter of campus research laboratories, including, but not exclusive to, labs in Biological Sciences and Biochemistry. This includes on-site assistance with SOP prioritization, development, and review; Lab Safety Recognition Program on-site evaluation/review; PPE/Hazard Assessment; and inspection follow-up as needed.

Responsibilities
  • Develops, implements, and monitors campus environmental and safety programs, systems, procedures, and training in: industrial hygiene, safety engineering, environmental protection, fire prevention, and hazardous materials through implementation of the Compliance Assistance Program, a comprehensive laboratory inspection program:
  • Performs technical work related to field of expertise:
  • Responsible for identifying hazards, interpreting EH&S programs, providing guidance on corrective actions, and involving other EH&S Specialists as appropriate.
  • Organizes, schedules, and conducts inspectionsinteracting with department, laboratory, and shop personnel. Adapts as required to the needs of each department.
  • Attends laboratory department safety committee meetings as assigned.


  • Designs new and/or recommends improvements to existing processes and procedures.
  • Participates in formulation of annual inspection topics based upon assessment of previous inspections, new or changing compliance requirements, and EH&S management and specialist input.
  • Works with EH&S IT staff to maintain and improve, as necessary, management of inspection and program data.


  • Monitors compliance by conducting initial and follow-up on-site inspections in the lab facilities of approximately 135 Principal Investigators (PIs).
  • Establishes necessary corrective actions and procedural changes with laboratory personnel, including principal investigators, in addressing environment, health and safety deficiencies.
  • Independently interprets regulations, provides advice, gives direction and makes commitments.
  • Monitors compliance timeline constraints, tracks progress, and reports areas of concern.
  • Fully implements the Enforcement of Safety Standards in Academic Environments Policy including informing personnel of the need to stop work if an imminent hazard is observed.
  • Uses various tracking tools and systems to assure correction of identified deficiencies, reporting concerns or time constraints to the program lead as appropriate.
  • Notifies appropriate faculty and departmental leadership of inspection results, and planned risk reduction activities.


  • Establishes corrective action as needed.
  • Ensures timely resolution of high risk issues.
  • Uses various tracking tools and systems to assure correction of identified deficiencies, reporting concerns or time constraints.
  • When appropriate, assists campus departments in correcting environmental, health and safety non-compliance issues (e.g., chemical storage, hazardous waste, fume hood use, earthquake safety securing, respiratory protection, chemical inventory, hazardous work operations, chemical hygiene plans, and ergonomic workstations)


  • Coordinates follow-up reports on findings and other documentation to campus clients including use of relevant scientific data if appropriate. Collects and reports inspection data and metrics.
  • Provides on-site consultation to Principal Investigators, Laboratory Managers, and other laboratory personnel on laboratory specific issues of concern relating to EH&S programs. Works closely with research groups to develop, review and document Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs).
  • Performs outreach and communication to campus within relevant field.
  • Creates and adjusts methodologies to meet changing regulatory and scientific environment.
  • Within specific field maintains knowledge/expertise on existing/proposed changes in all regulations; interprets and applies relevant laws, regulations, codes and standards, including making recommendations for work environment changes based on interpretations and principles of professional practices. **See Governing Laws and Regulations below
  • Staff development
  • Works on professional committees and assignments, participates in professional training and attends relevant conferences, and/or is mentored or coached on a formal or informal basis.


  • Member of Designated Urgent Response Team (Regular rotation, 24/7, every 4th week or more frequently as needed.)
  • Provide technical support to the Dedicated Urgent Response Team (DURT) program by serving as a Designated Responder. Must be accessible via telephone or pager and readily available to respond on-scene to emergencies (e.g., a chemical spill) during business hours. Will perform directly or coordinate any necessary field activities to evaluate and mitigate a hazard.
  • Provide technical support to the DURT program by serving as the Lead Off-Hours Responder. Must be accessible by UCPD via telephone or pager and readily available to respond on-scene to emergencies (e.g., a chemical spill) during non-business hours. Must be within one hour of campus and may not engage in activity that will affect the ability to respond.
  • To serve as a designated responder, incumbent must meet the specific requirements of the DURT program as outlined in the EH&S DURT Program Guidelines. These include occupational physical qualifications.
  • Medical baseline is required.


  • Performs other duties as assigned, including but not limited to,
  • At the request of campus management (EH&S Director, VC Administration, UCPD Chief, or designated alternate), must be available in a campus disaster or campus hazardous material release/threatened release, to serve in the appropriate emergency response role based upon expertise and, where applicable, designated departmental role.


Required Qualifications
  • Thorough knowledge of specific EH&S field(s) including related laws and regulations; and general knowledge of all EH&S fields.
  • Thorough knowledge and skill in applying and interpreting applicable local, state, and federal regulations and related standards and guidelines.
  • Thorough written, verbal, and interpersonal communication skills, including political acumen and skill to communicate effectively in a diverse environment.
  • Strong analytical and organizational skills to organize, prioritize and manage the successful completion of projects within time and budget constraints.
  • Skill to appropriately use technology and relevant scientific equipment as required.
  • Ability to integrate professional approaches and techniques from multiple environmental, health, and safety disciplines to solve difficult problems.
  • Experience with a variety of professional environmental, health and safety fields.


Education/Training:
  • Bachelor degree or higher in Chemistry, Biochemistry or Biological Science and three years of professional experience in a comprehensive environmental health and safety program; and/or equivalent experience/training.


Preferred Qualifications
  • Prior research experience in biological science or biochemistry fields.
  • Working knowledge of application of environmental, health and safety regulations germane to UC Berkeley.
  • Knowledge and familiarity with UCB organizational and research environment, including research laboratories.


Licenses or certifications:
  • Professional certification such as Certified Industrial Hygienist (CIH), Associate Safety Professional (ASP) or Certificate Safety Professional (CSP) preferred.

There are municipal, regional, county, State, and federal regulators that have jurisdiction, often overlapping, over those campus programs and activities being audited. Salary & Benefits

This is an exempt, monthly paid position. The annual salary range of the position is $67,500.00- $95,000.00, commensurate with experience.
