Departmental Overview

University Development and Alumni Relations (UDAR) strengthens Berkeley's excellence through engagement with alumni, parents, undergraduate and graduate students, and friends of the University, raising public awareness about Berkeley and increasing private philanthropy. UDAR provides overall direction for the campus' philanthropic advancement strategies and works to strengthen unit development in partnership with campus fundraisers. The Division handles a range of central activities and services encompassing communications, stewardship, prospect development, gift management, and more.

The Student Experience& Diversity Fundraising (SED) program is designed to raise significant funds and provide meaningful engagement opportunities for alumni, students, and friends contributing philanthropically to the success of Berkeley students and the advancement of educational equity. The SED fundraising program raises funds in support of student aid, co-curricular activities, diversity, equity and inclusion. The SED Program interfaces with a broad range of divisions on campus, with focus on the offices of Equity & Inclusion, Undergraduate Education, and Student Affairs. The fundraising program encompasses major gift fundraising from individuals and foundations as well as direct response marketing.

  • Under general supervision, exercises limited discretion and professional judgment in implementing established components for fundraising and alumni relations programs and activities; or plans, administers, and implements a well-defined or established fundraising program requiring the exercise of limited discretion and judgment.
  • Provide comprehensive administrative support for Student Experience & Diversity and helps in administering fundraising and strategic planning initiatives. Schedule meetings with prospects, faculty, and administrators.
  • Handle logistics including travel arrangements, itineraries, and briefing materials.
  • Respond to telephone inquiries and correspondence on behalf of the unit.
  • Develops and maintains reports, providing basic analysis of program trends, and short and long range results.

Information Systems and Data Entry:
  • Perform inquiry functions using the CADS database (Campus wide Alumni Development System).
  • Enter and retrieve data from system.
  • Create query sentences for extracting data from system or calculating fundraising totals.
  • Manipulate and present data in a number of end-user applications (Work, Excel, PowerPoint).
  • Enter contact reports in CADS utilizing information from briefings, correspondence and e-mails.
  • Update biographical information in CADS as necessary.
  • Create and produce custom CADS invitation lists for special program events.
  • Schedules and/or coordinates events.
  • Make travel arrangements as needed and prepare and submit for processing complex travel reimbursements and expense reports
  • Drafts informational and marketing materials for review for assigned programs.
  • Facilitate communication between staff and a variety of University departments; draft edit/format and proof routine and complex correspondence
  • Assists in developing materials for specific fundraising activities and/or promotional efforts as writing, speaking, telephoning, et cetera, as needed.
  • Handles special projects/assignments involving direct interaction with alumni volunteers and donors.
  • Conducts research on alumni, friends, corporations, and foundations to identify prospects.
  • Coordinates work of support staff.

Required Qualifications
  • Working knowledge of fundraising, donor relations and public relations concepts, principles, procedures and techniques.
  • Working knowledge of the campus, its vision, mission, goals, objectives, achievements and infrastructure, or ability to learn.
  • Comfortable working with high-level alumni, donors, and campus leadership.
  • Working knowledge of applicable laws, rules, regulations, policies, et cetera.
  • Good written and interpersonal communication skills to establish and maintain good working relationships throughout the campus and with external constituencies.
  • Good organizational, analytical and critical thinking skills.
  • Ability to work successfully in teams and under own initiative, as well as the ability to shift priorities, handle multiple assignments, and meet deadlines
  • Strong computer skills (MS Word, Excel, PowerPoint), with a proven ability to learn new technical skills quickly and proficientlySkill to maintain confidentiality and ability to work with highly sensitive, confidential information.

  • Bachelor's degree in related area and/or equivalent experience/training.

Salary & Benefits

This position is a non-exempt, bi-weekly paid position. Hourly pay for this role is commensurate with experience.
