Departmental Overview

The Center for Human Sleep Science is located in the Department of Psychology, within the College of Letters and Science. The department's teaching and research activities focus on all aspects of psychology.

Research in the Center for Human Sleep Science is focused on the role of sleep in brain function. The laboratory uses an array of multi-modal imaging techniques ranging from functional MRI to quantitative electroencephalography and polysomnography. The laboratory also uses numerous computerized cognitive psychology techniques for assessing brain function.

The Staff Research Associate (SRA) will assist the Principal Investigator (PI), postdoctoral researchers, and graduate students with research on behavioral and functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) studies of sleep and cognition in humans across the lifespan.

Responsibilities
  • Under the direction of the PI and/or Postdoc(s) the Staff Research Associate (SRA) will provide research assistance in the fields of sleep, cognition, aging and the brain.
  • Coordinate and conduct laboratory research on sleep and brain function including memory experiments. Incumbent will oversee experiments from start to finish including (but not limited to) recruitments, scheduling subjects, preparing and running the experiments, as well as accurately collecting and recording the data.
  • Perform both data and statistical analyses for collected cognitive, EEG, polysomnography, and MRI data compiled from the experiments as well as maintain and organize the collected data according to the laboratory standards.
  • For reports and publications, prepare and provide tabular and graphical information for reports and publications.
  • Collaboratively write in production of grants, reports, and publication.
  • Provide assistance to PI, Postdocs, and graduate students with their research.
  • Insure proper operation and maintenance of the laboratory such as purchase, receive, store, and distribute supplies for lab projects; maintain inventory records.
  • Ensure proper operation and maintenance of laboratory equipment; perform simple equipment repair and maintenance. Laboratory maintenance also includes cleanups and set-ups.
  • Research and administrative duties will include but is not limited to general bookkeeping, processing and submitting reimbursement requests, maintenance of laboratory data sets, and library searches. Prepare and submit amendments, new projects, and annual renewal of research proposals for the local ethics review board the Committee for the Protection of Human Subjects (CPHS).
  • Provide training to undergraduate assistants in both lab and analysis methods. Attend weekly meetings.
  • Other duties as assigned.


Required Qualifications
  • Knowledge commensurate with undergraduate studies in Neuroscience, Cognitive Science, Biomedical Engineering, Bioengineering, Psychology, or other related scientific field.
  • Previous experience in EEG and MRI research
  • Previous Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation (TMS) experience
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills.
  • Interpersonal skills to establish and maintain cooperative working relationships with a multi-diverse campus community.
  • Knowledge, and abilities essential to the successful performance of the duties assigned to the position. These skills, knowledge, and abilities are typically acquired through a combination of extensive study and experience.
  • Bachelors and/or Master Degree in Psychology, Neuroscience or Cognitive Science, Biomedical Engineering, Bioengineering, Psychology, or other related scientific field and/or equivalent combination of education/training.


Preferred Qualifications
  • Basic computer programming language skills in MATLAB, R, and/or Python.
  • Familiarity with SPSS, R, and MATLab
  • Previous experience with cognitive testing software such as Eprime, Presentation, or PsychToolbox


Salary & Benefits

This is a monthly paid (exempt) position. Annual salary range is commensurate with experience (stepped rates).
