Departmental Overview
University Development and Alumni Relations (UDAR) strengthens Berkeley's excellence through engagement with alumni, parents, undergraduate and graduate students, and friends of the university, raising public awareness about Berkeley and increasing private philanthropy. UDAR provides overall direction for the campus's philanthropic advancement strategies and works to strengthen unit development in partnership with campus fundraisers. The division handles a range of central activities and services encompassing communications, stewardship, prospect development, gift management, and more.
A full-service professional team, External Relations and Marketing Communications supports these activities with videos, websites, events and programming, email campaigns, slide decks, printed collateral, and more.
Position Overview
The Video Producer is responsible for ensuring the production of high-quality fundraising, donor recognition, and event programming videos that advance the university's comprehensive fundraising mission and priorities.
A campuswide expert, the incumbent uses skills as an experienced video professional to plan, shoot, and edit videos that tell UC Berkeley's philanthropic engagement story to our diverse donor (and potential donor) constituency. These videos include profiles of students, alumni, and donors; narratives about the university's past, present, and future; and promotional, instructional, and celebratory pieces that support large campus events such as Homecoming and Commencement.
The incumbent works with the Editorial, Design, External Relations, and Web teams to research and create high-end videos hosted on the department's various website properties and publicized via social media channels, electronic newsletters, and the main Berkeley.edu website as well as its News Center. These videos are also shown at events related to the campaign and other university functions.
In addition, this position provides editing support for crowdsourced and in-house videos, creates social media cuts to work on various platforms, and supervises one or more work-study student production assistant positions.
The incumbent demonstrates a full understanding of industry practices, accessibility practices, and campus policies and procedures, using good judgment in selecting methods and techniques for obtaining solutions. This position reports to the digital and multimedia communications lead.

Responsibilities
Video Creation: Conceptualizing, planning, shooting, and editing videos that effectively illustrate the primary theme and priorities of the public phase of our multi-year campuswide fundraising campaign, and philanthropic priorities beyond. This includes:
- Storyboarding
- Interviewing
- Script creation or co-creation
- Identifying, vetting, contacting, and coordinating a wide variety of subjects with approving stakeholders
These video subjects will include high-level university staff, alumni, and donors requiring great interpersonal care
- Scouting locations and acquiring permissions for their use
- Shooting videos that meet industry standards for lighting, color, and sound
- Editing videos, using graphics supplied by graphic design colleagues
- Creating a final product that meets approving stakeholders' standards and UDAR's editorial guidelines
- Providing the correct types of files to web team colleagues and other outlets in a timely manner
Additional Video Support:
- Conceptualizing, scripting, and creating promotional, instructional, and highlight reel videos to support large campus events
- Editing crowdsourced videos from the global Cal community, for use on websites and social media
- Editing videos created by ERMC colleagues at events, for use on websites and social media
- Assisting in management of departmental Youtube channel
- Helping to implement departmental captioning policy and process
- Providing video consultation to campus units and UDAR colleagues on projects related to the campaign or the chancellor's strategic plan
Departmental Collaboration: Participates in regular planning meetings for campaign and other philanthropic marketing content (e.g. editorial pieces, photo shoots, events) being created and disseminated across departmental, university, and outside platforms
Professional Development: Maintains currency with emerging and state-of-the-art technical and other web-related equipment, requirements and developments (for example, accessibility issues) and recommends and as directed, takes action to ensure compliance
Required Qualifications
- Thorough understanding of video equipment including cameras, lighting, and sound
- Ability to create video content that is clear, informative, accurate, compelling, functional, and consistent with the campus messages as directed by management
- Thorough technical skills in computer applications for video content editing (specifically in Adobe Premiere and/or DaVinci Resolve) and production
- Strong interpersonal communication skills, including political acumen and skill in trouble-shooting and applying proactive and positive solutions
- Thorough skills to develop and implement original ideas and correctly identify and effectively avoid or resolve problems
- Ability to work effectively in a fast-paced editorial setting, under tight deadlines and with competing priorities
- Ability to collaborate as part of a team, hearing and responding appropriately to varying perspectives and communication styles
- Solid interviewing and research skills
- Knowledge of and ability to implement accessibility requirements
Education/Training
- Bachelor's degree in related area and / or equivalent experience or training
Preferred Qualifications
- Thorough understanding of institutional processes, procedures, and applicable rules and regulations for video communications
- Some background in fundraising and/or higher education communications
- Experience with project consulting and management skills to ensure deliverables are running smoothly and deadlines can be met effectively

Under California law, the University of California, Berkeley is required to provide a reasonable estimate of the compensation range for this role and should not offer a salary outside of the range posted in this job announcement. This range takes into account the wide range of factors that are considered in making compensation decisions including but not limited to experience, skills, knowledge, abilities, education, licensure and certifications, analysis of internal equity, and other business and organizational needs. It is not typical for an individual to be offered a salary at or near the top of the range for a position. Salary offers are determined based on final candidate qualifications and experience.
The budgeted salary or hourly range that the University reasonably expects to pay for this position is $74,300 - $104,400, commensurate with experience.
- This is a full-time (40 hours a week) exempt, monthly paid career position, eligible for full UC benefits.
- This is a hybrid position, eligible for 33% remote capability.
