Job Summary:
The Annual Giving Writer at the University of San Francisco (USF) has the primary responsibility of writing and editing content about USF to help build a culture of philanthropy and cultivate annual giving, leading to long-term engagement and commitment from alumni, families, employees, students, and friends of USF. USF's Change the World From Here Campaign has been transformative, and the Annual Giving Writer will play an integral role in the public phase of this comprehensive campaign at an exciting time in the university's evolution.

Reporting to the Director of Development Communications, this position is a key member of the USF Development Communications team and will implement the vision and strategy of the Annual Giving program. The Annual Giving Writer will also work with the Development Communications team on long-form and short-form writing and communications projects to support alumni engagement and fundraising goals for the university.

Full Job Description:

Primary Duties and Responsibilities

The Annual Giving Writer will have the primary function of serving as the lead content writer for all Annual Giving communications. Key responsibilities include:

  • Collaborating with Development and institutional colleagues in the creation, design, and production of fundraising solicitations in alignment with Development Division and University of San Francisco fundraising strategy and goals
  • Creating and managing writing projects from inception through delivery, targeting key audience segments as determined by the overall Annual Giving strategy
  • Researching, composing, and editing letters, email, and other written materials to build a library of solicitation collateral that appeals to targeted audiences
  • Assisting the Director of Annual Giving in the planning and management of the annual solicitation calendar
  • Supporting special projects as assigned by the Director of Development Communications, such as long-form or short-form web content, marketing copy for special events, social media content, and other fundraising collateral
  • Providing copy editing and proofreading across the Development Division to ensure alignment with university style guide standards and brand voice, as needed

  • Bachelor's degree
  • Minimum two years' experience in marketing, journalism, nonprofit communications, or a related field
  • Demonstrated understanding of and experience with annual giving solicitation and acknowledgment strategies
  • Experience in conceptualizing and designing copy to reflect distinct voices and to appeal to various constituencies
  • Experience interviewing individuals (such as donors, students, faculty, alumni) to help inform content
  • Ability to manage multiple projects and deadlines simultaneously, with careful attention to detail
  • Ability to work effectively and collaboratively across teams to meet deadlines
  • Excellence in written communication and editorial skills, including grammar, style, syntax, and copy editing

Preferred Qualifications
  • Experience working in higher education or nonprofit
  • Proficiency with design software, such as Adobe InDesign
  • Proficiency with email marketing software
