Position Title: Technical Assistant – Dental Hygiene
Union: FFECC

This position supports the Dental Hygiene Department. The work involves performing para-professional tasks assisting the faculty of a Community College. The incumbent’s duties are varied and range from setting up equipment in laboratories to tutoring students in developmental centers. The tasks assigned are generally of a supportive nature and may be performed in the classroom, laboratory, research or development center, learning center, or computer center. The work is performed under general supervision of an instructor or other faculty member. Supervision may be exercised over
students or clerical assistants; does related work as required


  • Assists instructor in classroom, clinic and laboratory activities by demonstrating apparatus, equipment and teaching aids;
  • Administers and/or proctors tests under direction of instructor or other faculty member;
  • Works with students in use of various clinical and technical equipment in classroom, clinic and laboratory setting;
  • Tutors students on individual basis in classroom, clinic, and laboratory environments;
  • Assists instructor in maintaining academic and clinical records, preparing reports, etc.;
  • Maintains records of requisitions and SDS; monitors, maintains and issues supplies and equipment to students and faculty;
  • Maintains accurate inventory of supplies and equipment;
  • Performs routine equipment maintenance on and make minor repairs of apparatus, equipment, and teaching aids;
  • Is cross-trained to perform clinical/administrative duties as requested by the department head
  • Participates in the development of clinical policies and procedures;
  • Attends departmental monthly meetings.


Candidates must be able to demonstrate awareness and sensitivity towards promoting an inclusive and diverse learning environment. Good knowledge of the clinical, laboratory and academic area in which assigned; ability to work with and tutor students in academic/clinical area in which assigned; ability to work with students, faculty and peers in an effective manner; ability to understand and follow detailed oral and written instructions; strong written and oral skills; initiative; resourcefulness; accountability;
reliability; integrity; strong knowledge of computer programs; demonstrates a commitment to fostering and advancing a diverse and inclusive work force; physically capable of performing the essential functions of the position with or without reasonable accommodation.


Completion of (30) semester credit hours of study at a regionally accredited college or university, which should include course work in the dental field; mandatory infection control training and BLS/CPR certification. Three (3) years of recent full-time experience in a dental facility is highly preferred. Outstanding public relations and interpersonal skills as well as computer applications in the dental office are desired.
