Departmental Overview

The Department of Molecular & Cell Biology (MCB) is home to undergraduate and graduate academic programs as well as Faculty Research performed by faculty organized in five divisions:
  • Biochemistry, Biophysics and Structural Biology
  • Cell and Developmental Biology
  • Genetics, Genomics and Development
  • Immunology and Pathogenesis
  • Neurobiology


Responsibilities

Teaching Laboratory Preparation and Maintenance:
  • Working under the direction of the group's senior SRAs and as part of a cooperative team (staff and graduate student instructors), the incumbent performs support functions for the teaching laboratories in the preparation, setup, maintenance, and cleanup of the materials and equipment for the daily laboratory class exercises.
  • Examples of required laboratory procedures include: preparation of a wide range of biological materials, solutions, buffers and media following procedures and protocols in lab manuals or by performing the necessary calculations and dilutions. This includes Molar, Normal, percent weight per volume, percent volume per volume, and saturated solutions.
  • Uses pH meter to prepare biological buffers such as potassium phosphate and Tris.
  • Prepares liquid growth media such as Nutrient Broth, YPD, Luria Broth, top agar using sterile technique.
  • Participates in the growth and maintenance of strains and cultures for class, including yeast and bacteria, maintaining sterility and using equipment such as spectrophotometers or microscopes to assess density and growth stage.
  • Participates in the growth and maintenance of strains of C. elegans and D. melanogaster.
  • Assists in the handling and preparation of live and prepared organismal materials for lab sessions (frog, rat brain, sheep brain, cow eye).


Lab Class Support Services:
  • Organizes and maintains cleanliness of work and storage spaces to promote efficient and orderly function.
  • Maintains cleanliness and organization of student laboratory classrooms, prep room, and other support spaces.
  • Participates in maintaining inventories of chemicals, materials, and supplies, and restocks from Storeroom or promptly reports to team as necessary to ensure operational requirements are met.
  • Follows standard occupational safety and health procedures, and reports all safety and health-related incidents, issues, and deficiencies to the Supervisor.


Assistance in Teaching Lab Related Projects:
  • Assists in the testing and updating of preparation and class procedures, and keeps lab notebooks of results and yields.
  • Under general supervision and following defined lab procedures, performs various molecular biology techniques, such as: purifying and cloning DNA, transforming bacteria and yeast, expressing and purifying protein, and running gels.
  • Assists senior staff in special projects related to the courses or lab rooms.
  • Other duties as assigned.


Required Qualifications
  • Two years of recent related laboratory experience, and/or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Demonstrated experience in preparing large quantities of complex solutions, buffers and media for experiments.
  • Demonstrated experience working with a variety of laboratory instrumentation, including ability to trouble-shoot equipment whenever problems arise and resolve problems quickly so that instruction can continue with minimal disruption.
  • Willingness to learn new techniques and skills, in order to implement improvements to a course of instruction.
  • Ability to work with live and prepared vertebrate organisms.
  • Knowledge of laboratory safety techniques and procedures.
  • Ability to adhere to all Campus and EH&S Safety Policies and Procedures.
  • Ability to work effectively, both independently and as a team member, with students, faculty, and staff, including individuals from a wide variety of cultures and backgrounds.
  • Ability to function well under pressure and achieve results.


Preferred Qualifications
  • Bachelor's degree in the biological sciences and/or equivalent combination of experience/training.
  • Computer proficiency.


Salary & Benefits

This position is a non-exempt, bi-weekly paid position. Hourly pay for this role is commensurate with experience within the range of $21.07 - $22.89, Steps 1.0 - 3.0.
