Tufts Comparative Medicine Services (Tufts CMS) provides facilities, services, and information to facilitate effective research using laboratory animals at Tufts University and Tufts Medical Center in Boston including the Surgical and Interventional Research Laboratories (SIRL) and the Human Nutrition Research Center on Aging at Tufts University in Boston, and Tufts University in Medford. Tufts CMS is also obligated to ensure that animal care procedures and animal experimentation comply with federal, state, and local regulations. The management and operation of the animal care activities of all sites are integral to the animal care and use program. All centralized facilities are located within a 2-block radius, either in Boston or Medford.
The position requires surgical and anesthesia proficiency in a variety of laboratory animal species and animal models. Independently, or under general supervision of the veterinarian in charge, coordinate the scheduling and general operation of the research surgical facilities; induce and monitor general anesthesia in laboratory animals; perform surgery; provide technical assistance and nursing support to postoperative animals; assist investigative staff with experimental procedures, anesthesia, pre-, intra- and postoperative care and monitoring; and provide nursing services to animals. Provides care to laboratory animals maintained with Tufts CMS. Additional responsibilities may include model development, protocol development, client interaction and consultation, as well as providing mentorship/collaboration/training to/with internal and external investigators and their research staff. Actively participates in interdepartmental training and continuing education seminars.
