Departmental Overview

UC Berkeley's College of Engineering is globally recognized for its educational and research excellence, consistently ranking among the top three Engineering colleges in the United States. Berkeley Engineering is the second largest college on the Berkeley campus, with more than 240 regular faculty members and over 6,500 students enrolled across seven academic departments. The Marketing & Communications unit supports the college's core projects and programs through efforts designed to reach over 85,000 alumni, friends, students, foundations and corporate partners.

The Web Director works independently to develop and maintain complex web sites and develop, enhance, and maintain a variety of digital properties with a broad audience and/or with a high consequence of error. The ideal candidate mentors less experienced staff, exercises judgment in selecting methods, techniques and evaluation criteria for obtaining results.

Responsibilities

30% Manage College of Engineering websites: Primary admin for engineering.berkeley.edu and other designated websites that reach a broad, highly segmented audience; responsible for content, design, underlying code (WordPress core, plugins, themes), periodic maintenance, user credentialing and training. Work with staff, faculty, student employees and external partners to keep sites fresh, accurate and accessible, and to add functionality as required. Working collaboratively with others in Marketing & Communications, ensure that the Berkeley Engineering website serves the college's communications objectives and strategic initiatives; provides engaging, accurate, and timely content; is intuitive for users; and makes optimal use of emerging web technologies. Formulate plans of action to introduce improvements to the site, such as strategies for increasing traffic and promoting usability and interactivity. Work with campus accessibility staff and CoE digital accessibility specialist to optimize accessibility of college websites, social media channels and digital documents. Work with the college's information technology group to track and implement web development technologies. With the approval of the assistant dean of marketing and communications, source, select and manage external vendors providing website development services. Serve as a central resource for questions and requests from digital communications staff in CoE departments, centers and institutes.

20% Manage WordPress hosting network: In partnership with information systems analyst, manage the college's WordPress hosting account with external vendor, encompassing 200+ CoE-affiliated websites. This includes creating new sites as requested, and maintain site startup templates; acting as super-admin; coordinating system-wide updates between hosting vendor and individual site admins; creating policies and develop documentation to assist site owners; troubleshooting and tech support for sites on the network.

20% Support collaboration tools: Primary admin and tech support for shared departmental tools, including Box, Google Workspace, LastPass Enterprise, campus calendar, Siteimprove QA & accessibility scans, video & audio captions & transcriptions, Google web tools (Analytics, Tag Manager, Search Console, Programmable Search), AP Stylebook, social media aggregation, Photoshelter DAM. Create and manage access for SPAs (departmental Google accounts) and bulk emailing (Google Groups, CalGroups, Mailchimp, Salesforce Marketing Cloud, Thunderbird). Manage content creation and revision for online donations (Give to Berkeley funds & fund drives, CoE website integration).

10% Strategic planning & management: Research current developments and best practices in digital publishing, web development, accessibility, communications and productivity software and tools, and other relevant topics. Recommend and implement actions based on this knowledge. Develop methods to benchmark peer institutions, assess audience needs, analyze web usage, and improve website usability (including accessibility). Serve as chief consultant to managers on digital communications. Represent the college on campus committees pertaining to digital communications, development and policies. Maintain strong working relationship with central campus IT, DNS admins, departmental technical and communications staff, College Relations team and relevant campus user groups.

10% Training & support: Create and update documentation and other training resources on use of tools and systems, including WordPress, email services, DAM. * Provide tech support to the MarComm team on miscellaneous tools and topics, as needed. * Manage programming and digital signage software for public TV screens in selected CoE buildings. * Other duties as assigned.

10% Supervise MarComm web team: Provide guidance, support and periodic reviews for digital accessibility specialist. Recruit, hire and supervise additional members of the web team as authorized.

Required Qualifications

  • In-depth knowledge of digital media, content management systems, relevant web applications used for website production and digital communications, and computer application programs.
  • Comprehensive skill in developing and maintaining effective websites and digital properties; a minimum 5 years managing a complex network of websites.
  • Extensive experience with WordPress CMS as an editor and an administrator, using both block editor and classic editor.
  • Mastery of core digital communication languages and tools, including HTML, CSS, Photoshop, Google Workspace and Google webmaster tools.
  • Thorough understanding of processes, procedures and applicable rules and regulations for digital communication, including in-depth knowledge of web accessibility standards and best practices, current WCAG criteria, and campus and UC policies.
  • Aptitude for finding, evaluating and mastering new tools to meet evolving needs.
  • Excellent communication, listening and collaboration skills, both written and verbal, including the ability to communicate complex topics clearly and succinctly.
  • Strong attention to detail and project management skills.
  • Ability to work well independently and within a team.
  • Flexible, adept at multitasking, and able to think critically and creatively.
  • Bachelor's degree in related area and / or equivalent experience / training.


Preferred Qualifications

  • Significant knowledge of the organization, including its achievements, goals, objectives, vision and mission and how digital communication can effectively convey and advance the message to various audiences.
  • Proficiency with extended digital communications tools and languages, such as Javascript, PHP, Adobe Creative Suite, Microsoft Office, project management tools, email marketing tools, online transaction systems.
  • Journalism, UX/UI and/or design background.
  • Web server system admin experience.

Under California law, the University of California, Berkeley is required to provide a reasonable estimate of the compensation range for this role and should not offer a salary outside of the range posted in this job announcement. This range takes into account the wide range of factors that are considered in making compensation decisions including but not limited to experience, skills, knowledge, abilities, education, licensure and certifications, analysis of internal equity, and other business and organizational needs. It is not typical for an individual to be offered a salary at or near the top of the range for a position. Salary offers are determined based on final candidate qualifications and experience.

The budgeted salary or hourly range that the University reasonably expects to pay for this position is $115,000 - $148,000 yearly. This is a 100% FTE career position eligible for full benefits.

This position has a a hybrid work schedule that will require regular presence on campus (weekly). Significant remote work, in consultation with the Assistant Dean.
