Departmental Overview

Enhancing the health and wellness of our Cal community is a big job. Rec Sports is dedicated to providing an ongoing variety of educational, fitness, and wellness opportunities to support a healthy lifestyle. We offer classes and facilities to support our students, faculty, and staff in both their personal growth and physical fitness goals.

Recreational swimming is a major program area at all campus pools. UCB students, staff, faculty, alumni as well as community individuals and their families swim year round at these facilities. The Lifeguard performs duties in the areas of public relations and guest services, enforcing/promoting safety, emergency response, and facility maintenance. This position provides lifeguard services for the campus and daily operations at the Spieker Aquatic Complex, Hearst pools, Strawberry Canyon Recreation Area (SCRA) pools, and Golden Bear Recreation Center (GBRC).


  • Maintain a proper and professional surveillance of the pool and the patrons in and around it.
  • Maintain a high level of concentration and vigilance.
  • Provide information, assistance and service to patrons.
  • Make proper referrals for guests as needed.
  • Resolve conflicts or confrontations with guests.
  • Defuse patron confrontations and customer services issues in a professional manner
  • Enforce safety rules and regulations governing use of swimming areas.
  • Prevent accidents from occurring.
  • Provide Immediate First Aid and Emergency Response Care as needed.

  • Review all manuals and informational items (memos, brochures, flyers, etc.) to provide guests with accurate information.
  • Attend required training courses and staff meetings.
  • Maintain certifications.

Required Qualifications
  • Working knowledge of aquatics/lifeguard activity practices and procedures. Requires verbal and written communication in the English language, active listening, dynamic flexibility, critical thinking, multi-task and time management skills. Able to exercise independent sound judgment and employ reasoning skills. Client service minded, entrepreneurial spirit and creative thinking.

Licenses or certifications required, if any:

Current American Red Cross certifications includes:
  • Lifeguard Certification Lifeguard Training & First Aid CPR: For the Professional Rescuer & AED Title 22 First Aid (California State Law)

Salary & Benefits

This position is a non-exempt, bi-weekly paid position. Hourly pay for this role is commensurate with experience.

Other Information

This is a part-time, 9.60 hours per week, Limited (temporary) appointment with an end date of March 1, 2021. This position is ineligible for UC Benefits.

This position is governed by the terms and conditions in the agreement for the Technical Unit (TX) between the University of California and the University Professional and Technical Employees (UPTE). The current bargaining agreement manual can be found at:

This is a designated position requiring fingerprinting and a background check due to the nature of the job responsibilities.
