Instructional Designer – Continuous and Professional Education (CAPE)

The Instructional Designer position is part of the new Continuous and Professional Education (CAPE) initiative within ITS. The Instructional Designer will be instrumental in helping subject matter experts create highly engaging and effective online and blended learning experiences in support of St. Thomas’ strategic plan for growth in the online/blended, continuous and professional development learning space. The instructional designer will collaborate with the video production team and take primary responsibility for the completion of specific new online or blended courses, certificates and/or badges under the CAPE initiative.


1. Work collaboratively with SMEs and the video production team to create dynamic, interactive online, blended, and face-to-face courses.

Serve as a main point of contact with SMEs and guide the design process for required online courses that meet deadlines and expectations for quality.
In collaboration with SMEs, design and develop the necessary elements of online courses, e.g. assignments, discussion prompts, group work, assessments, videos, etc.
Working in the LMS, build out necessary online courses in support of CAPE.
2. Manage the course development process from start to finish, ensuring that the SME meets established milestones and deadlines.

3. Ensure that courses meet St. Thomas and CAPE branding, quality, and accessibility standards

4. Other duties as assigned

Minimum Qualifications

Bachelor’s degree in instructional design, educational technology, or a related field

Two years of experience collaborating with subject-matters experts to design and develop eLearning within a non-profit, corporate, or educational setting

Experience using a variety of instructional technologies, including learning management systems, web conferencing, audio and video recording, and course authoring tools

Any equivalent combination of education and experience from which comparable knowledge and skills have been acquired may be substituted.

Preferred Qualifications

Master’s degree and experience designing online, blended, and face-to-face courses for a non-credit, continuing education program
Experience creating instructional materials and media that meet ADA/accessibility standards
Experience teaching or training adult learners
