Departmental Overview

How do you define a quality life? Recreational Sports helps each individual pursue that answer by providing a wide variety of fitness and wellness programs. Supporting this larger mission requires a focus on daily activities, consistent values, and the continual pursuit of a long-term vision. We're committed to providing an atmosphere and an environment that is accessible, accommodating, and inclusive for a wide range of people and a wide range of abilities.

The Department of Recreational Sports offers members of the UC Berkeley community an extraordinary experience to live active and meaningful lives while on campus.

Programs and services range from group fitness, aquatics, adventure trips, drop-in fitness and recreation, intramural sports, sport clubs, personal training, WorkFit, and many other activities. Recreational Sports is enhanced by its indoor and outdoor facilities, including three indoor locations, four pools, five tennis courts, and an outdoor adventure center at the Berkeley Marina.

The Group Exercise program is a part of the Fitness Department at the Recreational Sports Facility (RSF) at UC Berkeley. Our mission is to promote the knowledge, wellness, fitness, and quality of life for students, faculty, staff and the community. Our team of professional instructors educate, motivate and empower the campus community to make healthy lifestyle choices specifically in the areas of fitness and wellness. The Group Exercise team is highly visible and their knowledge and public relations skills are critical to the overall image of the RSF and the Fitness Department.

    Required Qualifications
    • Working knowledge of program activity practices and procedures.
    • Verbal and written communication skills in the English language, active listening, critical thinking, multi-tasking, time management skills, and dynamic flexibility in adapting to the needs of clients.
    • Ability to exercise independent sound judgment and employ reasoning skills.
    • Client service minded, entrepreneurial spirit and creative thinking skills.
    • Basic skills in computer programs relevant to job duties.
    • Knowledge of and/or ability to learn Rec Spots campus policies and procedures.

    • Maintain current CPR/AED certification throughout duration of employment.

    Preferred Qualifications
    • Current NCCA Fitness or Group Exercise related certification to instruct in the applicable recreational sports program or equivalent experience preferred.
    • Previous experience working with age level specific to an activity is preferred.

    • High school diploma or equivalent certification preferred.
