Departmental Overview

The intellectual heart of UC Berkeley, the College of Letters & Science (L&S) is the largest of the university's 14 colleges and schools and the most prestigious teaching and research unit in the UC system. L&S encompasses more than half of the campus's faculty, three-quarters of its undergraduate students, and half of its Ph.D. candidates.

The L&S Facilities Office is available to serve the College of Letters & Science with new construction, maintenance and operations services and support.

The Shop Assistant, under close supervision, assists with basic electronic and mechanical repairs to laboratory equipment and instrumentation in support to the College of Letters & Science teaching and research operations.

  • Under close direction, incumbent assists with and/or performs basic repairs and preventative maintenance of scientific equipment commonly used in biology labs. Maintain shop areas including tools and machinery, and proper use of safety equipment. Unpack, move, and install laboratory equipment. Prioritizes incoming work orders as per departmental policies. Manages time and plans jobs to achieve recharge financial goals. Documents labor and material usage for recharge reports. Maintains shop and shop equipment in serviceable and safe condition. Maintains shop inventory. Assist LSFO with miscellaneous operational tasks (equipment moves, equipment installations, material pick-up and delivery) as requested.

Professional Development:
  • Develops equipment repair skills through direct instruction from supervisor and other online training and resources.

Required Qualifications
  • Basic mechanical and low-voltage electrical repair experience.
  • Ability to work with a high degree of precision and manual dexterity.
  • Experience using power, hand and bench tools such as drills and soldering irons.
  • Demonstrated organizational and decision-making abilities to prioritize competing work assignments in order to meet deadlines and adherence to quality standards.
  • A working knowledge and basic understanding of a fundamental mechanical and electrical concepts required in equipment repair.
  • Ability to accurately record servicing labor and expense costs and subsequent and monthly billing reports.
  • Effective written and verbal communication skills.
  • Graduation from high school or a General Education Diploma and one year of related experience, and/or an equivalent combination of education and experience.

Salary & Benefits

This position is a non-exempt, bi-weekly paid position. Hourly pay for this role is commensurate with experience.
