Departmental Overview

The Department of Recreation & Wellness provides competitive and recreational opportunities for students, faculty, staff and campus affiliated community members. In addition to the 31 sports clubs, the department offers a wide range of recreational activities and state of the art equipment.

Responsibilities

  • Proposes the athlete and sport-related strategies, goals, and objectives for the sports team on a short and long-term basis.
  • Plans, conducts, and supervises all practice and conditioning.
  • Assumes full team responsibility for recruitment and performance.
  • Evaluates athlete's performance and designs instructional opportunities to improve technical and strategic execution based on sound motor learning and bio mechanical principles.
  • Assesses participants' skills and assigns team or activity positions.
  • Evaluates student-athletes performance and designs instructional opportunities to improve technical and strategic execution based on sound motor learning and bio-mechanical principles.
  • Aids the team in recruitment endeavors and enriches team performance.
  • Coaches team at competitive events.
  • Plans, conducts and supervises all practice and conditioning sessions.
  • Ensures adherence to all governing rules, policies and procedures.
  • Assesses participants' skills and assigns team or activity positions.


Required Qualifications

  • 1-3 Years Coaching Experience (high school or college level preferred).
  • Demonstrated knowledge and understanding of the stages of student development and the importance of a holistic collegiate experience with the focus of academic
  • Specialized knowledge of the team sport.
  • Leadership skills to mentor and develop athletes of all ages and abilities.
  • Current knowledge of applicable rules and standards of the affiliated collegiate league, regional conference and National Governing Body and at all times avoid any and all violations of these rules and standards.
  • Ability to establish appropriate and effective mentoring relationships with players.
  • Must be able to demonstrate a professionally acceptable level of creativity, sound judgement, and decision making, as effective communication abilities, verbally and in writing.
  • Bachelor's degree in related area and / or equivalent experience / training.
  • Red Cross CPR, First Aid, and AED certification, current.
  • Current Nationally recognized and sanctioned sport certification if available.

Under California law, the University of California, Berkeley is required to provide a reasonable estimate of the compensation range for this role and should not offer a salary outside of the range posted in this job announcement. This range takes into account the wide range of factors that are considered in making compensation decisions including but not limited to experience, skills, knowledge, abilities, education, licensure and certifications, analysis of internal equity, and other business and organizational needs. It is not typical for an individual to be offered a salary at or near the top of the range for a position. Salary offers are determined based on final candidate qualifications and experience.

The budgeted salary or hourly range that the University reasonably expects to pay for this position is $30,000.00 - $50,000.00 over the duration of the contract.

  • This is a 8-month, 50% full-time (20 hours per week), contract position that is eligible for UC benefits.
  • This position is exempt and paid monthly.
