High school diploma or equivalency. Certification as a Law Enforcement Officer in accordance with the provisions of the North Carolina Criminal Justice Training and Standards Commission or the ability to achieve certification within one year of employment. Additional Education and Experience will be necessary for progressive steps (Journey and Advanced).

Must have three years of law enforcement experience, possession or eligible to obtain an Intermediate Law Enforcement Professional Certificate.
Successful completion of 200 hours of law enforcement continuing education training excluding mandated in-service training hours. Successfully complete written IPMA Exam for Detectives. Demonstrated competencies associated with the following duties: effective performance of general patrol duties (emergency response, medical, traffic, and service); the ability to perform effective investigations; an understanding of crime prevention and community policing in a university environment; the ability to effectively use and maintain law enforcement equipment.
Preferred experience with North Carolina A&T State University Police Department.

Required License or Certification
Certified as a law enforcement officer in accordance with the provisions of the North Carolina Criminal Justice Training and Standards Commission. Out-of-state candidates must have successfully completed a Basic Law Enforcement Training course accredited by the state of transfer to be considered. Out-of-state candidates cannot have a break in service from the out of state agency of more than one year. All out-of-state candidates will have to complete 96 hours (or more) of training to be eligible for NC Certification and pass the state exam. Please note that federal experience is not recognized by the North Carolina Standards and Training Commission.
Primary Purpose of Position
The primary purpose of this position is to carry out the activities of police patrol on the University campus. This position patrols assigned areas for response to complaints or calls and for detection of violations of those observed committing offenses, investigating violation or complaints in order to assess and handle cases, responsibility for the collection and preservation of evidence and chain of custody and testifying in the court proceedings. At the Journey level, knows and complies with regulations, polices, procedures, and general orders without prompting or assistance. Work is performed under general supervision, guided by applicable laws, regulations and policy, and reviewed through job effectiveness, oral and written reports.
Primary Function of Organizational Unit
The primary purpose of this unit is to provide an effective and efficient link between the University Community and the University Police Department’s operations and services 24 hours a day, 365 days per year. The Department of Police and Public Safety maintains the responsibility of providing a safe and secure community for the students, faculty, staff and visitors. All University Police Officers are sworn full[time police officers who are state certified by the North Carolina Criminal Justice Training and Standards Commission and must receive Basic Law Enforcement Training before being sworn as Police Officers. NC A&T State University Police Officers have complete police authority to enforce local, state and federal laws on all property owned or leased by the University and on streets that run through, are adjacent to, or border the campus.
