Departmental Overview

As students develop their applied mastery in one of over 350 carefully selected field placements, Berkeley Social Welfare field education consultants provide them with individualized assessment, support and coaching throughout their academic journey.

MSW students have the opportunity to apply classroom learning by engaging in supervised practice in an agency setting. We offer students two distinct, field placements. In addition, through both placements, we provide continuous educational support from the same field faculty member(s) and cohort-based field seminar section. By offering variety and consistency, we are able to both broaden and deepen our students' learning experiences.

As students develop their applied mastery in one of over 350 carefully selected field placements, Berkeley Social Welfare field education consultants provide them with individualized assessment, support and coaching throughout their academic journey.

Responsibilities

Applies professional concepts to perform analysis of data and systems pertaining to moderately complex projects, policies and/or processes and functions.

Within the Sonia database:
  • Identifies and executes best practices for the creation, revision and distribution of forms to appropriate stakeholders while ensuring accurate and functional links within forms
  • Maintains accuracy and linkages of student and agency information.
  • Ensures proper database permissions and access for field instructors, field faculty, students, and field director and security roles and data storage aligns with UC data protection requirements
  • Provides regular, ongoing technical support and training for database issues that student and/or school representatives encounter. Resolves procedural and technical issues in the context of department policies and procedures with a customer-service mindset.
  • Identifies, proposes, and executes business process improvement projects taking in business practice and technical considerations.


Within Overall Program:
  • Develops systems that leverage existing tools to improve program processes (e.g, coordination of student health clearance requirements by partner agencies, accurately tracking affiliation agreements, communication with agencies and with Business Contracts )


Gathers and assembles analytical and factual data on assigned problems and issues to prepare reports and/or analyses summarizing information on the assigned issues and commenting on other significance for internal department constituents.
  • Works with Director to plan a budget that will meet programmatic needs within human and financial resource constraints
  • Ensures proper management of program budget, including tracking spending on trainings, food, and travel, and alerts Director and Dean's Office to deviations
  • Prepares student placement, agency contact, student competency, and other reports for field faculty, program director, and other administrators. Identifies trends and forecasts needs and further analysis needed based on reports


Prepares, edits and modifies documents including research reports, manuscripts, presentations, proposals, and programmatic guidelines.
  • Manages Field Education's affiliation agreements with multiple agencies: tracks agreement expiration dates as well as communication with agency contacts and UC Berkeley's Business Contracts Office staff; identifies and elevates risks to Director of Field Education and Dean's Office
  • Negotiates affiliation agreements with partner agencies that clearly outline the degree of liability for UCB and the agency, in a manner consistent with UC Berkeley's risk management objectives


Provides a variety of administrative duties in support of a function, program and/or organizational unit.
  • Interacts with members both internal and external to their unit to achieve smooth operation of the Field Education program
  • Works with Dean's Office Staff to organize all logistical aspects of field-related events (e.g. Field Instructor Training, Advanced Field Instruction and Clinical Supervision Training, and Skills Workshops). This includes securing appropriate venue, food, and documentation of participant information for continuing education units.
  • Serves as the first point of email, phone, and /or in person contact for students, faculty, staff, and the public regarding the Field Education Program and associated instructional grants.
  • Coordinates student selection/application processes for program's instructional grants (i.e. Integrated Behavioral Health, Substance Abuse Disorder)
  • Coordinates the renewal process for the School of Social Welfare's general and professional liability insurance policies


Participates in administrative policy and program planning and development for progress toward the goals and sustainability of the Field Education Program.

Other duties as assigned.

Required Qualifications
  • Working knowledge of or ability to quickly learn common campus-specific and other computer application programs.
  • Solid communication and interpersonal skills to communicate effectively with all levels of staff, both verbally and in writing.
  • Solid ability to prioritize and multi-task with demanding timeframes.
  • Ability to use discretion and maintain all confidentiality.
  • Ability to use sound judgment in responding to issues and concerns.
  • Working skills to analyze information and synthesize large amounts of data with strong attention to detail.
  • Thorough knowledge of or ability to quickly learn University and departmental rules and regulations, processes.
  • Must demonstrate proficiency with Google Suite (email, calendar, docs, sheets, forms, etc.) and Microsoft Office Suite, especially Word and Excel
  • Thorough knowledge of basic database management systems and standards.
  • Must demonstrate interpersonal skills, problem solving skills, service orientation, active listening, effective verbal and written communication skills and organizational skills.
  • Must demonstrate ability to identify measures of system/process performance and the actions to improve performance through application/process configuration and programming techniques.
  • Bachelor's degree in related area and/or equivalent experience/training


Salary & Benefits

This is an hourly paid position, commensurate with experience within the range of $24.14 - $32.56.
