California Partners for Advanced Transportation Technology (PATH) was established in 1986. It is administered by the Institute of Transportation Studies (ITS), University of California, Berkeley. PATH is a multi-disciplinary program with staff, faculty and students from universities statewide, and cooperative projects with private industry, state and local agencies, and non-profit institutions.
PATH's mission is to develop applied solutions to the problems of California's surface transportation systems. It does this through cutting edge research, careful consideration of regional needs and statewide and federal policies, the use of new and proven technologies, the adoption of promising communications and control tools, and an awareness of the entire transportation equation. PATH develops these solutions by harnessing the knowledge of transportation researchers, working in conjunction with experts in the fields of information technology, electrical engineering, mechanical engineering, economics, transportation policy and behavioral studies. It tests these solutions in the real world, adjusts and refines them, evaluates their costs and efficacy empirically, reports and documents the results of these inquiries in technical, professional and public forums, and helps deliver working solutions both within California and around the world.
One of the programs within PATH is Connected Corridors, which focuses on Integrated Corridor Management (ICM). This program is developing a unique ICM proof-of-concept system for Caltrans which will be used to help manage on an approximately 20 mile stretch of I-210 in the communities of Pasadena, Arcadia, Monrovia, and Duarte. The system is designed to coordinate actions between Caltrans, LA County and the four communities involved, as well as local transit providers, to utilize and coordinate all available assets including arterial roads in the event of a traffic incident. This includes the use of alternative traffic signal timings, varying ramp meter metering rates, dynamic message signs, and rerouting traffic where additional capacity is available. The system developed for managing and directing this activity uses multiple subsystems and implements a microservices architecture within an AWS environment.
This position provides cloud engineering services for the systems development team as well as for production operations that will start by late 2018 or early 2019 and will continue through the proof-of-concept period. In addition, this position will be responsible for transition activities to ensure the system can be maintained and operated by Caltrans when it assumes responsibility for the system.
These cloud engineering services include the design and implementation of the full automation of the system deployment, which will use AWS CloudFormation along with other technologies for containerization, configuration, and build tools. In addition, this position provides expert services in AWS design and configuration to ensure many system capabilities are provided effectively and efficiently: optimal security, resource utilization, reliability, resiliency, system monitoring, issue and failure identification and remediation, component build and deploy, configuration management, and other related capabilities. An in-depth knowledge of the following is highly desired: linux OS, security principles and practices, microservices architectures and their use in AWS environments, highly automated operational environments in AWS, AWS CloudFormation scripting, build and deploy automation using AWS build tools, container tools such as Docker, AWS cost structures, networking within AWS environments, production operations, monitoring tools within an AWS environment, and continuous integration within development teams.
15% Provide CloudFormation and deployment automation services. Automate entire cloud deployment for both full deploy and system updates.
10% Provide release management services, supporting configuration management and release engineering processes. Use AWS services to support release management and configuration management.
10% Provide build management services within the continuous integration processes of an agile development team. Use AWS services to support build management processes.
10% Provide cloud engineering designs for a complex cloud-native system with multiple subsystems and a large number of integration points.
10% Provide cloud security engineering services at all levels - application, networking, user access, monitoring, remediation. Utilize automation of system monitoring and remediation.
10% Provide testing of all cloud service deliveries.
5% Provide documentation of design and implementation efforts. Provide documentation for system operations and maintenance.
5% Provide training services for Caltrans maintenance and operations personnel.
5% Provide EC2, RDS, and EMR automation for system configuration.
5% Utilize and deploy image management and container management services.
5% Provide production operations management services during initial production operations.
5% Provide networking services within an AWS environment.
