Sigma Tau Delta, International English Honor Society (ΣΤΔ), with its Central Offices associated since 1968 with Northern Illinois University’s English Department, is a not-for-profit 501(c) 3 organization with 900+ ΣΤΔ chapters in the U.S. and abroad, and is one of the largest collegiate honor societies in the country. Its outreach program for secondary schools, the National English Honor Society (NEHS) has an additional 900 chapters, and is the only national honor society exclusively for high school students in English.
The Director of Society Operations (DSO) reports directly to the Sigma Tau Delta Executive Director, and acts for and assumes full authority for administrative and operational matters in the absence of the Executive Director. The DSO is the primary administrative advisor to the Executive Director regarding overall programs, resource management, and Society operations. The DSO provides independent leadership and oversight of the Society’s extensive international operations in the areas of internal and external communications, public relations, alumni relations, chapter development, and marketing, insofar as these areas promote the Society, its goals, and objectives. He/she has supervisory responsibilities for directing several supporting staff members. The individual in this position must work and exercise leadership with a wide range of constituencies, including university administrators and faculty, and high school principals and teachers; he/she must possess advanced knowledge, abilities, and professionalism to work credibly, as a peer, with these individuals.
