SUMMARY DESCRIPTION
Under direction from the Facilities & Energy Projects Manager, leads, oversees, and performs the more complex and difficult work of staff responsible for performing skilled electrical work in the installation, repair and maintenance of electrical systems and equipment including lighting circuitry, computerized fire and alarm systems, conduit systems and electrical control mechanisms; oversees and participates in troubleshooting, diagnosing, and calibrating electrical equipment and systems; oversees and participates in installing cable and conduit for fiber optic cable, phone and data systems; performs predictive, preventative, and corrective maintenance as assigned; oversees other trades staff as assigned; and maintains a variety of records.
DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS
This is the lead level class in the Electrician series. Positions at this level are distinguished from other classes within the series by the level of responsibility assumed and the complexity of duties assigned. Employees perform the most difficult and responsible types of duties assigned to classes within this series including the provision of functional and technical supervision over assigned staff. Employees at this level are required to be fully trained in all procedures related to assigned area of responsibility.
REPRESENTATIVE DUTIES
The following duties are typical for this classification. Incumbents may not perform all of the listed duties and/or may be required to perform additional or different duties from those set forth below to address business needs and changing business practices.
1. Lead, plan, train, and review the work of assigned staff responsible for performing skilled electrical work in the installation, repair and maintenance of a variety of electrical equipment and controls including interior and exterior electrical lighting circuits, conduit and duct systems, transformers, and other types of electrical power equipment; train assigned employees in their areas of work including proper electrical repair and maintenance methods, procedures and techniques; participate in performing the most complex work of the unit including researching and contacting venders to coordinate and implement energy saving projects; ensure daily compliance of CAL/OSHA safety rules and regulations.
2. Supervise the use, care, operation, and maintenance of a variety of hand tools, power tools, pneumatic tools, trucks and other equipment related to area of assignment.
3. Verify the work of assigned employees for accuracy, proper work methods, techniques, and compliance with applicable standards and specifications; ensure adherence to safe work practices and procedures.
4. Oversee and participate in installing and maintaining automated systems including parking lot lights, emergency lights and fire and security alarms and controls.
5. Oversee and participate in troubleshooting and repairing short circuits, power failures and other electrical problems; test, locate and repair damaged electrical circuitry.
6. Oversee and participate in repairing and replacing defective or worn electrical parts in motors, generators, pumps, telemetry equipment, controllers, switches and other facilities and equipment.
7. Inspect newly installed electrical equipment and lighting to ensure safe and satisfactory functioning.
8. Perform predictive, preventative, and corrective maintenance on equipment.
9. Oversee and participate in inspecting, cleaning, disconnecting, improving, and reenergizing high voltage networks.
10. Oversee and participate in installing low voltage fiber optic cable for networking purposes as required; inspect, correct and modify cable as needed.
11. Respond to electrical calls and emergencies as necessary.
12. Operate and maintain a variety of hand tools, power tools, pneumatic tools, trucks and other equipment in the performance of assigned duties.
13. Prepare and maintain a variety of written records and reports; read and interpret electrical and mechanical drawings and specifications.
14. Estimate time, materials, and equipment required for jobs assigned; requisition materials as required.
15. May provide lead supervision to other maintenance and operations personnel as assigned; provides hands on support as necessary.
16. Perform related duties as required.
QUALIFICATIONS
The following generally describes the knowledge and ability required to enter the job and/or be learned within a short period of time in order to successfully perform the assigned duties.

Establish and maintain effective working relationships with those contacted in the course of work.
Education and Experience Guidelines - Any combination of education and experience that would likely provide the required knowledge and abilities is qualifying. A typical way to obtain the knowledge and abilities would be:
Education/Training:
Equivalent to completion of the twelfth grade supplemented by specialized journey-level training in the maintenance and repair of electrical lighting, motor control panels and computerized alarm systems.
Experience:
Four years of responsible journey-level experience in the maintenance and repair of electrical systems including lighting, motor control panels and computerized alarm systems and components.
License or Certificate:
Possession of a valid California driver’s license and proof of insurability.
Obtain certificate of completion for Cal/OSHA high voltage electric safety and operation training as required.

Environment: Work is performed in both indoor and outdoor field environment; travel from site to site; exposure to noise, dust, grease, smoke, fumes, electrical energy and high voltage and all types of weather and temperature conditions; work at heights on scaffolding and ladders. Occasional exposure to risks controlled by safety precautions. Positions may be required to work evenings and weekends. Frequent exposure to hazardous activities including high voltage electricity.
Physical: Primary functions require sufficient physical ability and mobility to walk, stand, and sit for prolonged periods of time; frequently stoop, bend, kneel, crouch, crawl, climb, reach, and twist; push, pull, lift, and/or carry moderate to heavy amounts of weights; operate assigned equipment and vehicles; verbally communicate to exchange information.
Vision: See in the normal visual range with or without correction; vision abilities required by this job include close, distance, and peripheral vision, color perception, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus; and to operate assigned equipment.
Hearing: Hear in the normal audio range with or without correction.

This position is a short-term, temporary, hourly, Non-Bargaining Unit (NBU) assignment, not to exceed 160 days per fiscal year (July 1-June 30). The assignment is on an as needed basis, and may be shortened or extended at any time, due to departmental needs, with little to no notice. This recruitment will remain open until filled or withdrawn. Employment with the South Orange County Community College District is contingent upon successful completion of the Human Resources pre-employment (“onboarding”) process. NBU at-will employment: After successful completion of the onboarding requirements, an individual may be employed by the South Orange County Community College District as a short-term, temporary NBU employee. Employment will be on an “if and as needed” basis, as determined by the District. NBU employment is at-will, and either party may terminate this working relationship at any time. Neither party shall be required to provide any reason for the separation. NBU employees shall not have reemployment rights or recourse to petition to be reinstated.
Worksite: NBU employees are limited to working in a single position in one department/site
Work schedules: Department/Division managers, administrators, and/or supervisors shall determine the work schedule of NBU employees to include the number of days and hours worked per week and the start and stop times.
160-day restriction: NBU employees will not work more than 160 days (in any combination of NBU positions) no matter how many hours per day they work.
Payroll reporting period: The payroll reporting period is from the 15th of the first month to the 14th of the next month. NBU employees are paid on the 10th of the following month. Ex: Pay Period 01/15/23 through 02/14/23 will be paid on March 10th.
California Sick leave: NBU employees are eligible for California Sick leave per AB1522. Information regarding AB1522 is provided to all NBU new hires during the onboarding process.
Retirement information: NBU employees may not work more than 960 hours from July 1st-June 30th. NBU employees who work more than 1000 hours per fiscal year are required to contribute to the California Public Employees’ Retirement System (CalPERS), through payroll deduction of about 7-9%. The District does not intend to employ NBU employees for more than 1,000 hours during any fiscal year.
