Responsibilities

The Mechanician Lab Helper serves as a helper in the Lawrence Hall of Science Production Studio. The incumbent will work closely with other team members to help generate solutions to interactive exhibit and educational materials challenges. General departmental tasks including exhibit turn-on/shut down, forklift operation, maintenance of storage areas, maintenance of shop area including tools and machinery, maintenance and proper use of safety equipment and perform other related duties as required. Incumbent will also assist in the fabrication, installation, repair and maintaining the cleanliness and functionality of interactive science education experiences for the museum exhibit galleries, classrooms and learning labs.

  • Provide basic troubleshooting for out-of-order exhibits. Willing to learn advanced techniques to work on mechanical, carpentry, electronics, plastics, and metal work on projects with a variety of tools, processes, and materials. Works closely with other team members to help generate solutions to interactive exhibit and educational materials challenges. Works, under supervision, to assist with the fabrication, installation, repair, and maintain the cleanliness and functionality of interactive science education experiences for the museum exhibit galleries, classrooms, and learning labs.
  • General departmental tasks including exhibit turn-on/shut down, forklift and scissor lift operation, maintenance of storage areas, maintenance of shop area including tools and machinery, maintenance and proper use of safety equipment. Organize and maintain shop supplies as directed.
  • Works, under supervision, to assist with the fabrication, installation, repair, and maintain the cleanliness and functionality of interactive science education experiences for the museum exhibit galleries, classrooms, and learning labs.
  • Other duties as assigned & Professional Development.


Required Qualifications

  • Ability to foster a collaborative work environment with a multi-disciplinary team, and to assist in identifying any challenges or barriers to this environment.
  • Excellent communication skills and ability to interact effectively with both colleagues and a diverse family learning audience.
  • Aptitude for troubleshooting, repairing, and basic problem solving.
  • Good communication skills Required Customer service skills in order to interact with our public visitors.


Preferred Qualifications

  • Prior experience in an interactive Museum, Science Center or Educational Environment.
  • Prior customer service experience in an active family environment.


Education and Training

  • Graduation from high school or a General Education Diploma and two years of experience in the operation of standard carpentry or machine shop equipment; or an equivalent combination of education and experience


Salary & Benefits

  • This is a 100% Career position with full benefits.
  • Non-exempt, paid hourly and bi-weekly.
  • Standard work week includes one weekend day, holiday work required.
  • This is not a visa opportunity.


This position is governed by the terms and conditions in the agreement for the Technical Unit (TX) between the University of California and the University Professional and Technical Employees (UPTE). This range takes into account the wide range of factors that are considered in making compensation decisions including but not limited to experience, skills, knowledge, abilities, education, licensure and certifications, analysis of internal equity, and other business and organizational needs. It is not typical for an individual to be offered a salary at or near the top of the range for a position. Salary offers are determined based on final candidate qualifications and experience.

The budgeted salary or hourly range that the University reasonably expects to pay for this position is $29.37 - Step 1 to $30.72 - Step 2 / hourly
