Job Summary:
The Assistant Director will provide leadership, guidance, and oversight of financial aid processing for graduate, professional, veteran, transfer and independent students. The position manages the workflow, strategic timeline, customer service, and compliance of this area of the office. This person works collaboratively and strategically with the Associate Director and other members of the leadership team. (S)he is responsible for coordinating office presentations for graduate/professional schools. This position manages the private loan and graduate PLUS loan portfolios for the University.

Job Description:
Reporting to the Associate Director of Financial Aid Operations, the Assistant Director provides counseling services to current and prospective students and their families regarding the financial aid process. In addition, the Assistant Director processes graduate level financial aid including scholarships and loans. Responsibilities include but are not limited to:
  • Communicates regularly and supports all university/professional colleagues and community members.
  • Oversees and ensures the accurate, compliant, effective, and efficient operation of the following financial aid programs within the Office of Student Financial Aid: Graduate scholarships, graduate level Direct Loans including Unsubsidized and PLUS loans, Private alternative loans for all students.
  • Supports the implementation and updates of federal, state, institutional, and private financial aid programs.
  • Coordinates/supports the training and development needs of all financial aid staff with respect to graduate financial aid issues and programs.
  • Serves as a member of the office management team, and supports in all management responsibilities.
  • Works with other Assistant Directors to establish parameters for timely and accurate processing, reporting, and reconciliation of the federal direct PLUS loan and graduate Unsubsidized loan programs.
  • Assist with all written and verbal communication with students to ensure the highest standards of customer/client services and support established procedures to ensure compliance with applicable laws, regulations, and University policies (consumer information).
  • Provide scholarship posting support to graduate programs, reconciling and ensuring compliance with donor, foundation and institutional direction.
  • Participates in graduate orientation and information sessions held on-campus and at satellite campus location. Travel and overnight stays may be required.
  • Actively participates in state, regional and national professional development activities (conferences and trainings) to ensure a complete understanding of federal and state regulations and remain current on changes to the federal and state aid programs.
  • Case management: Provides processing/audit support based on federal and institutional policy, financial aid counseling, monitoring enrollment status, and review of requests for additional aid in unusual or emergency circumstances.
  • Other duties as assigned

  • Bachelor's degree and at least three years of higher education experience - financial aid with counseling, processing, customer service, and/or administrative support.
  • Demonstrated ability to collect and analyze data and to use independent judgment where appropriate.
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills, a demonstrated ability to work with a diverse client population, and commitment to continuous quality improvement and customer services.
  • Experience with and knowledge of PC based administrative software - Microsoft suite including Excel and Word.

Preferred Qualifications:
  • Any combination of experience with Ellucian Banner, PeopleSoft, and/or Microsoft Office.
  • Knowledge of federal, state, and/or institutional financial aid program rules, regulations, or processes.
