Therapist IV - LGBTQ Mental Health Specialist

Position Category: Staff - Full-Time


Student Health Services at UVU offers Medical Services, Psychological Services, Psychiatric Services, Learning Disability Assessment, and Crisis Services to registered students.

Under direction of the Director of Mental Health Services the Therapist IV has the ability and expertise to provide culturally responsive diagnosis and treatment for learning, intellectual, psychological and social disorders and will provide psychological clinical case management; conduct individual, couples, and group psychotherapy; and provide consultation to other programs and agencies on treatment needs and behavioral plans. Additionally, the Therapist IV has advanced practice expertise or certification in an area of clinical significance and can provide specialized service to UVU students or enhance SHS. This position has a special focus on LGBTQ+ mental health and wellness. Coordinates this service or specialization. Required Qualifications:

Graduation from an accredited institution with a Masters or Doctorate in the Mental Health field (i.e. Psychology, Social work, Marriage and Family Therapy or Counseling) and three years of full-time experience in higher education counseling or clinical setting and meets the requirements of a Training Supervisor as required by the State of Utah. Possesses an advanced practice specialization, certification, or doctoral degree relevant to the field of mental health.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

  • Knowledge about psychological theories, diagnosis and treatment.
  • Knowledge of legal and ethical standards for the therapeutic professions.
  • Knowledge of essential principles of psychology, human behavior, counseling and psychotherapy. Knowledge of individual, group, and crisis intervention counseling techniques.
  • Knowledge of treatment plan development and implementation.
  • Knowledge of community mental health resources.
  • Knowledge of psychodiagnostic and psychiatric diagnosis based on DSM-V.
  • Knowledge of and participation in consulting techniques, public speaking, teaching, and presentations.
  • Knowledge of psychological tests, effective clinical interviewing, and other assessment tools that are utilized to diagnose mental and learning disorders according to the DSM-V.
  • Basic knowledge of psychopharmacology.
  • Knowledge of Title IX procedures and campus resources.
  • Knowledge of the theory and practice of clinical supervision.
  • Knowledge of applying current research and evidence based strategies in a specific field of expertise or specialty.
  • Skills in treatment planning and providing effective psychological treatment for UVU students.
  • Skills in documenting treatment progress of clients.
  • Skills in the diagnosis of psychological disorders based on the DSM-V.
  • Skills in organizing and/or conducting consultation to faculty, staff, and administrators.
  • Skills in public speaking, teaching, and workshop presentations.
  • Skills in communication and observation used in psychotherapeutic intervention.
  • Skills in documenting the progress of clients.
  • Skills in computer and software applications and confidential record keeping.
  • Skills in providing best practice clinical supervision to therapist trainees.
  • Skills in program development and coordination of a specific area of expertise or specialty.
  • Ability to recommend voluntary and/or involuntary commitment of clients for hospitalization for clients who present a serious threat of harm either to themselves or others.
  • Ability to provide suicide risk assessments using evidence-based practice.
  • Ability to diagnose psychological disorders based on the DSM-V.
  • Ability to keep accurate and precise treatment records.
  • Ability to communicate effectively.
  • Ability to be compliant with HIPAA and FERPA privacy laws.
  • Ability to be compliant with ethical standards established within the therapeutic professions.
  • Ability to provide supervision to therapists in training according to best practices for psychotherapeutic care.
  • Ability to be flexible and creative in coordinating UVU Mental Health Services programs in which a specialty exists.

Preferred Qualifications:

PHD or PSYD in Social Work, Psychology, Counseling or Marriage and Family Therapy.

Physical Requirements:

Frequent standing, sitting, walking, talking, hearing, and seeing. Occasional fine hand manipulation, such as typing.

Pay Range: $66,182 - $82,728
