Departmental Overview

You have the opportunity to join a talented and diverse team that will be on the front line of Berkeley's comprehensive fundraising campaign and communicating with a broad range of audiences. University Development and Alumni Relations (UDAR) strengthens Berkeley's excellence through engagement with alumni, parents, undergraduate and graduate students, and friends of the University, raising public awareness about Berkeley and increasing private philanthropy. UDAR provides overall direction for the campus' philanthropic advancement strategies and works to strengthen unit development in partnership with campus fundraisers. The Division handles a range of central activities and services encompassing communications, stewardship, prospect development, gift management, and more.

  • Researches, writes, and edits high-level communications, publications, and/or reports with complex or sensitive subject matter; assignments may include proposals, articles for publications, briefing materials, talking points, marketing materials, event materials, case statements, letters, direct mail solicitations, and web sites and content.
  • Consults with and advises clients regarding their communications needs to develop a strategic approach for projects that utilize most-effective messages. Identifies efficiencies
  • Project manages numerous assignments, covering a variety of subject matters, and prioritizes them according to shifting deadlines and their relative importance.
  • May edit and oversee design and production of a variety of print and online material.
  • May develop or manage publications or web sites to meet communication needs and manage a complex approval process with numerous stakeholders. This includes assessing a partner's needs, establishing schedules and ensuring project deadlines, overseeing review and approval processes of text and design iterations, and managing relationships with partners and stakeholders.
  • Determines content and sources for publications and written work, conducts research and interviews (with multiple and sometimes conflicting sources), and ensures accuracy, clarity, and effectiveness of writing to fulfill journalistic, development, and/or marketing standards.
  • May edit and oversee the design and production of a variety of print and online material.

Required Qualifications
  • Advanced knowledge of the fundamentals of writing, grammar, syntax, style, and punctuation and advanced skills to write clear, lively, engaging, compelling and effective copy in a variety of styles appropriate to target audiences and the broader public.
  • Advanced knowledge of appropriate editorial style and publication guidelines.
  • Advanced project management experience, organizational and problem recognition, avoidance and resolution skills.
  • Knowledge of computer applications for publishing, image handling, and/or web production.
  • Advanced skill in taking initiative to creatively identify and pitch story ideas to senior management and clients.
  • Advanced research and fact verification skills.
  • Advanced interpersonal communication skills, including active listening and effective collaboration skills.
  • Advanced analytical and critical thinking skills.
  • Skill to effectively work within a team environment and collaborate with others.
  • Skill to maintain absolute confidentiality.
  • Knowledge of the campus, including its mission, goals, achievements, infrastructure, programs, and policies.
  • Knowledge of issues in higher education, development and/or a specialized academic discipline or field.

  • Bachelor's degree in related area and/or equivalent experience/training.

Salary & Benefits

This is an exempt, monthly paid position. Annual salary is commensurate with experience within the range of $92,000.00 - $105,000.00.
