Departmental Overview

This role is part of the Berkeley Discovery team within the Division of Undergraduate Education (UE). UE is led by the Vice Provost for Undergraduate Education (VPUE) Oliver O'Reilly and consists of the Immediate Office of the VPUE as well as eight reporting units. UE engages the campus on vital academic initiatives that enrich the UC Berkeley undergraduate experience, one of which is the Berkeley Discovery Initiative.

Berkeley Discovery is a campus-wide effort to transform undergraduate education at Berkeley. Discovery aims to build a student experience where all undergraduates CONNECT to people, communities and resources that foster a sense of belonging; THRIVE intellectually in a curriculum filled with innovative, active teaching and learning; IMMERSE in mentored Discovery projects that demand self-direction, iteration, and applied learning; and REFLECT on what they've learned and be set up for a lifetime of purposeful, impactful reflection.

This position reports to the Assistant Director of the Berkeley Discovery Initiative and is a hybrid, full-time position with flexibility around when in-person work is needed. This is a 3-year contract position with the possibility of renewal.

The Program Manager will help launch and manage the Yardi Scholars Program, a new undergraduate cohort program launching Fall 2023 that brings together students committed to social change and democracy. This exciting program provides each participating student with a Regents and Chancellor's (R&C) Scholarship, additional financial support for a Discovery experience (e.g. study abroad, internship, research position, etc), mentorship and a cohort-based, Discovery-infused curriculum. Once fully implemented, the Yardi Scholars Program will support 60 students, of whom are transfer-entrants. Each Yardi Scholars cohort will include students from the College of Engineering and Division of Social Sciences who are chosen through the standard R&C process and also based on their demonstrated commitment to social change, upholding the democratic process and/or harnessing technology for the benefit of society. Through this program, Yardi Scholars benefit from financial support, a dynamic curriculum, intellectual community, and a program to foster and apply their commitment to improving the world around them. The Program Manager will be an integral part of shaping this program and will need to be flexible, proactive and committed to iterative improvements as we learn from each new cohort's experience.

The Yardi Scholars Program Manager will coordinate most aspects of the Yardi Scholars Program. The Program Manager will ensure all curricular aspects are developed and delivered on time and according to program goals, including a dedicated Berkeley Connect section, a dedicated section in a new Berkeley Changemaker course and a capstone course where students can apply their skills and passion for social change and democracy through intensive group projects. The Program Manager will also coordinate content-infused cohort events such as orientation events, luncheon salons with guest speakers and meetings with the donor. The Program Manager will support the development and launch of this exciting new cohort program and be responsible for coordinating with campus partners to ensure it is executed in alignment with the program goals. The Program Manager should have a passion for developing individuals and fostering a cohort that endures during their time at Berkeley and beyond.

  • Coordinates the different components of Yardi Scholars Program, ensuring their design, development and execution according to program goals.
  • Works in collaboration with Yardi Scholars Faculty Adviser, Discovery Faculty Director and Assistant Director of the Discovery Initiative to advance the work and ensure program success.
  • Coordinates efforts and implementation with a variety of contacts internal and external to the Division of Undergraduate Education, including campus partners who are critical to the program's execution, such as the Regents and Chancellor's Scholarship program manager and advisor, the Department of Political Science, Berkeley Connect, and Berkeley Changemaker.


  • Develops scope of work, budgets, and reports for the program and drafts briefings, executive summaries and slide decks.
  • Works with the UE institutional research analysts to ensure the assessment and success of the program's effectiveness, and recommends changes to program's content, policies and strategic goals accordingly.
  • Works with the Student Experience and Diversity (SED) and UDAR fundraising teams to prepare reports for the program donor.
  • Works with UE finance team to oversee the Yardi Scholars Program budget and to transfer grants to students for their Discovery experiences.
  • Researches, summarizes and seeks to integrate best practices from the field.
  • Gathers stories of student successes to be shared in a variety of ways (social media channels, written materials, Berkeley news articles, directly with the donor, reports, etc).


  • Helps to design and develop all of the activities that will support the cohort nature of the program e.g. luncheon salons, welcome events and meetings with the donor.
  • Connects with diverse student populations and thoughtfully advises students via phone, Zoom, email, and occasionally in-person. Provides individual counseling on non-routine issues, including on finding the best Discovery experience that matches their interest and experience (e.g. research position, internship, study abroad, community-engaged project, entrepreneurial endeavor). Will often refer students to other campus units with a warm handoff.


Required Qualifications

  • Academic coursework and/or demonstrated interest in the areas of political science, democracy and/or using technology for social change.
  • Experience in design and development of student programming.
  • Working knowledge of advising and counseling techniques.
  • Analytical/problem-solving skills and the ability to work independently and on teams and in situations with a significant amount of uncertainty or nuance.
  • Ability to work with a dynamic and diverse group of faculty, staff and students.
  • Working knowledge of and/or ability to learn about University policies, processes, and procedures related to student registration, aid awards, and payments.
  • Strong oral and written communication skills including drafting memos and reports and presenting to audiences of students, staff and faculty.
  • Ability to multi-task with demanding timeframes.
  • Attention to detail.
  • Student support orientation, especially to groups traditionally underrepresented in higher education.
  • Knowledge of and/or can quickly learn common University-specific computer application programs, specifically the Google Suite.
  • Bachelor's degree in related area and/or equivalent experience/training.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience with managing projects that span units or divisions.
  • Experience assessing processes and implementing improvements.
  • Knowledge of the campus-specific systems (Campus Solutions/CalCentral/BearBuy).
  • Minimum of three years working in a higher education setting, or related field.

Salary & Benefits

This is a 3yr, full-time (40 hours/week), contract appointment, eligible for full UC benefits with the possibility of extension. This is a monthly paid, exempt position.

This range takes into account the wide range of factors that are considered in making compensation decisions including but not limited to experience, skills, knowledge, abilities, education, licensure and certifications, analysis of internal equity, and other business and organizational needs. It is not typical for an individual to be offered a salary at or near the top of the range for a position. Salary offers are determined based on final candidate qualifications and experience.

The budgeted salary or hourly range that the University reasonably expects to pay for this position is $67,000.00 - $85,000.00.
