Departmental Overview

The mission of the Department of Residential Life is to facilitate residential student transitions into the intellectual and social communities of the University of California, Berkeley, and to promote personal well-being and respect for the community needs of all residents. Our residential and apartment communities are built on five intentional learning goals including Academic Success, Community Engagement, Diversity & Global Conscientiousness, Identity Exploration, and Holistic Wellness.


In Residential Life this position is charged with oversight of residential leadership at the University of California, Berkeley. Responsible for providing support to the academic mission of the University by contributing to students' out of classroom learning. Manages student services
for residents using specialized knowledge of learning and student development theory, counsels students and develops and implements programs for students during the academic year.

The Residential Leadership Coordinator (RLC) is a live-in position within Residential Life and is responsible for the oversight of the Residence Hall Assembly (RHA), the second largest student organization of the university, and the National Residence Hall Honorary (NRHH). The Residential Leadership Coordinator also serves as the central advisor to professional and student staff who serve as day-to-day advisors to student leaders of Hall Association, RHA, and NRHH. The Coordinator is responsible for the financial management and oversight of the Residential Student Experience Fee. The RLC must stay up to date on campus, regional, and national residence hall student leadership organizations, policies, best practices, and trends.

  • Undergraduate-Guide and support students who lead residential student organizations. Serve as the primary professional staff advisor representing Residential Life to the Residence Hall Assembly (RHA) and the National Residence Hall Honorary (NRHH). Regular attendance of Residential Life student leadership meetings. Develop and execute trainings and ongoing development opportunities for RHA and RHA leadership.
  • Graduate-Convene and advise the single Graduate Programming Board. Support the development of community in the single Graduate Housing community. Supervise the Residential Student Coordinator (RSC) for the Graduate Student Experience.

  • Guide professional staff as advisors to their respective hall associations. Provide direction and feedback to the advisors. Provide training on advising, leadership strategies and working with student leaders. Develop tools and resources for professional staff advisors to establish and maintain successful hall associations. Facilitate effective communication between professional staff and residential student organizations.

  • Assumes fiscal responsibility and management of the student experience fee under the guidance of the Assistant Director for Residential Life. Oversee professional and student staff in the management of the budget and finance system for the student experience fee.

  • Serve as an expert in risk management for the planning and execution of events. Participate in the rotation of the administrator on call in order to provide immediate consultative support to staff managing crisis interventions and student mental health issues. Facilitate conversations with students, staff, administrators and student emergency contacts in crisis situations.

  • Establish and maintain partnerships with divisional and campus colleagues, including the LEAD Center, Public Service Center, Government Relations and RSSP. Serve as a content expert for residential leadership programs and provide consultation and training to professional and student staff across the division of student affairs.

Required Qualifications
  • Experienced knowledge of specific learning theory, learning styles, affective issues, academic issues, and socio-cultural/linguistic issues in applying support to students.
  • Knowledge of how learning skills issues apply to a research institution.
  • Knowledge in designing and implementing learning and pedagogical models.
  • Knowledge of strategies in critical thinking, reading, writing, note taking, test taking, time management, and goal setting.
  • Demonstrated strong and effective verbal/written communication as well as interpersonal skills.
  • Skills in judgment and decision-making.
  • Problem solving and organizational skills.
  • Ability to demonstrate multicultural competence, knowledge and experience working and interacting effectively with diverse groups of staff, faculty, and student populations.
  • Knowledge of program development, data gathering, assessment, and evaluation skills.
  • Supervisory skills such as hiring, training, and providing feedback to student staff.
  • Bachelor's degree in related area and/or equivalent experience/training

Preferred Qualifications
  • Master's degree in counseling, higher education administration, student affairs, or a related field and/or equivalent experience/training

Other Information

This is a 4-year contract position. Along with salary and benefits, this position also includes free housing in a non-furnished studio apartment as well as a meal plan.
