Departmental Overview
The University of California, Berkeley is the preeminent public university in the country and one of the leading employers in the Bay Area. The Career Center is a student services unit that is part of the Division of Student Affairs. The Career Center educates undergraduates, graduate students, and faculty about the career planning process, job search and professional/graduate school strategies, and promotes connections among students, employers, alumni and professional/graduate schools. The Career Center provides comprehensive resources for all career and employment opportunities. The major components of the Career Center are Employer Relations, Counseling and Programs, Administrative Services and Executive Administration. This position is a part of the Administrative Services team and provides critical support to unit programs and services. This involves performing a variety of diverse tasks with minimal supervision directly related to specialized administrative support and direct customer service utilizing a variety of systems.

Responsibilities
  • Provide direct assistance to students, alumni, post-docs, employers, faculty and staff and the public regarding Career Center programs and services including a broad range of tasks not limited to:
  • Direct customer service - in person, telephone and email.
  • Client needs assessment and referral.
  • Policy and procedure guidance.
  • Targeted information concerning Handshake and other job search tools, appointments, Alumni Services.
  • Letter Service processes, programs and events.
  • Provide specialized administrative support for unit to include record-keeping, program support and data related to Career Center programs and services.
  • Facilitate systems access and troubleshoot systems, e.g. on line appointments, Letter Service, and Handshake, etc. and provide individualized assistance and resolution.
  • Provide specialized assistance to employers and guests supporting programming and sponsored events.
  • Gather and tally data related to client facing services.
  • Documents procedures and guides other Career Center staff as required; particularly regarding procedures.
  • Coordinate and accept unit deliveries.
  • Participate in team meetings and unit-wide committees and meetings.
  • Complete projects and unit wide support tasks as assigned.
  • Acts as back-up for other Career Center staff within Administrative Services as necessary.
  • Performs other duties as assigned as necessary.


Required Qualifications
  • 2+ years previous work experience in a customer service and administrative support capacity.
  • Proven experience working in a fast paced, diverse front-line, problem solving environment.
  • Relevant computer skills sufficient to competently and efficiently utilize database systems and PC-based software applications, including customized database software, Microsoft Suite, Adobe Suite and Google products.
  • Demonstrated communication and interpersonal skills sufficient to communicate effectively with all levels of clients, staff and employers, both verbally and in writing.
  • Demonstrated ability to exercise sound judgment and consulting lead or supervisor when researching and resolving situations in which a routine answer will not suffice.
  • Demonstrated ability to work independently, establishing priorities with minimal supervision.
  • Developed organizational skills, attention to detail, and ability to work under deadlines with conflicting demands.


Preferred Qualifications
  • Prior customer service experience in student services setting.
  • Prior experience with database systems involving multiple variables, e.g. job search tool.
  • Prior experience in team environment.


Salary & Benefits
This position is a non-exempt, bi-weekly paid position. Hourly pay for this role is commensurate with experience up to $21.43/hour

This position is governed by the terms and conditions in the agreement for the Clerical & Allied Services Unit (CX) between the University of California and Teamsters Local 2010.
