Overview of Student Learning Center (SLC)
The Student Learning Center supports a global community of learners as they navigate the cultural expectations and academic rigor of UC Berkeley. Through service models that honor their diverse starting points and meet them where they are, we aim to empower all students to realize their full academic potential. The Student Learning Center resides in the Division of Undergraduate Education.

Key Highlights
  • Founded in 1973 and is today the primary academic support unit for UC Berkeley.
  • Serves over 10,000 undergraduates annually, approximately 30% of the undergraduate student population.
  • Employs 20 professional staff with disciplinary expertise, 300+ trained undergraduate tutors, and 20 graduate student instructors.
  • Serves as the liaison between the Academic Senate and the DeCal program, a partnership that adds over 300 courses per year to Berkeley's curriculum.
  • Manages Berkeley's Summer Bridge Program, a rigorous six-week academic residential program for entering freshmen.

The incumbent administers the SLC Strategic Learning Program, which includes managing the daily operations of the program, providing students with concrete learning tools and strategies to navigate the curricular and cultural demands of Cal; and supervising a student and professional staff of 10-15. Specifically, the incumbent will:
  • Leverage research on the learning sciences to design and implement services that support Cal undergraduates at various stages in their academic careers;
  • Serve students in gateway courses across the curriculum, especially first-generation, historically marginalized, international, and non-traditional students;
  • Deliver service in a variety of formats, including one-on-one academic coaching, learning strategies workshops, and learning sciences seminars;
  • Train and supervise 10-15 peer staff on how to conduct academic coaching;
  • Coach and supervise a professional staff of 1-2;
  • Assess the effectiveness of program services and program staff;
  • Assess how curricular and academic policy shifts impact student learning; create new service models to address emerging academic needs.
  • Cultivate connections with faculty and advisors to ensure program visibility; maintain working relationships with key campus partners, including mental health professionals, DSP learning specialists, student affairs officers, etc. to serve students more comprehensively;
  • Support and mentor students, including student staff, in achieving their academic goals;
  • Collaborate with SLC colleagues on committees/workgroups to support the administrative needs of the Center.

Required Qualifications
  • Knowledge of research on how learning works, including research on cognition and metacognition;
  • Knowledge of sociocultural and affective issues affecting learning;
  • Knowledge of effective learning strategies for various learning preferences/styles; experience teaching students how to acquire and practice these strategies;
  • Knowledge of the structure, curricular, and cultural demands of the research university;
  • Experience working in a globally and culturally diverse learning environment;
  • Strong oral and written communication skills;
  • Strong interpersonal skills; strong professional acumen and discernment;
  • Demonstrated ability to learn and grow from feedback;
  • Demonstrated ability to thrive in a collaborative, high-functioning, high-trust culture;
  • Proficient computer skills, including experience using the Google Suite and Microsoft Office Suite and other social media platforms.

  • Master's degree in educational psychology, learning sciences, or any academic discipline and / or equivalent experience/training with experience providing academic support at the collegiate level.

Preferred Qualifications
  • A Ph.D. degree in the learning sciences, educational psychology, or a related field.
  • Experience administering and delivering learning-center work;
  • Experience teaching/working at a research university;
  • Experience in educational leadership.
