Under direction of the Grounds Maintenance Supervisor, maintain and improve all athletic fields and campus grounds to the level of attention determined by the University of St Thomas management and per NCAA rules. Interact routinely with coaches, administrators and event staff. Work with student grounds employees to complete projects.
This position is required to respond 24/7 to grounds related emergencies and weather related events.
Some weekends, evenings and holidays may be required.
This position requires exceptional teamwork with other Facilites Management and Athletic Department staff.
Perform a variety of natural and synthetic turf maintenance duties including mowing, blowing, fertilization, aeration, grooming, seeding, topdressing, chemical applications, edging, painting, chalking, infield skin maintenance and irrigation
Prepare athletic fields for practices, games and special events
Assist in the management and operation of the irrigation system
Daily litter control of lawns, planting beds, parking lots, drive lanes and sidewalk
Perform bed maintenance including weeding, mulching, pruning and herbicide application
Provide support for special events
Campus wide snow and ice removal
Perform general equipment maintenance and repairs
Perform other duties, as assigned
Opportunities to participate in continuing education such as seminars, workshops, correspondence courses and trade shows
Two year degree from an accredited institution in turf science or related field
At least two years of experience maintaining sports turf
Two years of snow plow operation experience
Must have a valid Minnesota Commercial Driver Class B license with an acceptable driving record
Must be able to pass the DOT physical qualifications and obtain a valid medical card
Must have a strong attention to detail and excellent customer service skills
Must be proficient in basic computer skills including Microsoft Office Suite of software products.
Knowledge and experience in landscape equipment operation and maintenance practices
Knowledge and experience with plant material identification and maintenance
Knowledge and experience in landscape irrigation programming, repairs and water conservation practices
Experience in pesticide and fertilization practices and applications and possess MN Department of Agriculture Pesticide Application license
MPCA certification in snow and ice control best practices
The ability to work outdoors for extended periods. The ability to occasionally stand and walk on uneven, sloped ground or pavement surfaces to complete maintenance such as pruning trees, shoveling, planting, mowing and weeding. The ability to occasionally walk, bend, stoop, twist, crawl and climb to complete maintenance such as picking up debris, trimming, mulching and planting. The ability to frequently push and pull materials and equipment weighing up to 50 pounds. The ability to frequently reach forward to steer or drive maintenance trucks and euipment. The ability to frequently reach overhead to prune trees. The ability and stamina to frequently sit and drive a company truck and ride on grounds equipment such as lawn mowers, plow trucks, and skid loaders. The ability to manipulate equipment such as hand tools, pole pruners, hand saws, pruning shears, and shovels. The ability to read printed materials and a computer screen. The ability to comunicate in person and over the telephone. The ability to work in extreme outdoor temperatures and conditions.
