Departmental Overview

Since its creation in 1947, the Institute of Transportation Studies has been one of the world's leading centers for transportation research, education, and scholarship by developing leading-edge innovations influencing movement of people and goods and advancing sustainability, economic health, and quality of life.

ITS serves as UC Berkeley's nucleus for multidisciplinary transportation research - including engineering, the physical sciences, social sciences, and humanities; student engagement; and outreach by addressing transportation problems and solutions in aviation operations, environmental and health impacts of transportation, infrastructure management, intelligent transportation system, logistics, pavement engineering, traffic operations, traffic safety, transit operations, transportation and energy, and transportation planning.

Over 150 faculty, researchers, and staff members are associated with ITS through various research and educational activities. More than 100 graduate students pursuing master and doctoral degrees currently study with ITS faculty and researchers. Over 125 graduates have gone on to university faculty positions and many more have become industry and government leaders.

The Institute's programs receive an average of $25 million in extramural funds each year, one of the largest such totals at the University for a research facility or academic department. ITS leverages its core state funding by a ratio of over 12:1.

The Research Data Analyst is responsible for conducting quantitative risk assessments (QRA) of transportation policies, their health outcomes, and their climate co-benefits. Position will join a large, multisite, research group (Salud Urbana en America Latina - SALURBAL) involving several institutions across the United States and Latin America conducting research in these two geographic areas. At UC Berkeley, the project is housed at the Institute of Transportation Studies and is led by a team involving Professor Daniel A. Rodriguez (City and Regional Planning) and Professor Iryna Dronova (Landscape Architecture and Environmental Planning and Environmental Sciences and Policy). This Research and Development Engineer will join a team of faculty, postdoctoral scholars, and graduate students at Berkeley also working on these projects.

This is a 55% FTE, 2-year contract role with the possibility of extension. The position may increase to up to 85% FTE depending on future funding.

Responsibilities

20% Serves as a principal assistant to the faculty investigator or research administrator in charge. Leads the design and application of a quantitative risk assessment of select transportation-related policies and their health and climate impacts.

20% Identify policies to be considered through review of the literature. Interact with critical actors in Latin America and SALURBAL researchers to finalize the policies.

20% Review epidemiologic evidence of expected impacts. Quantify effects using exposure response functions. Identify key inputs. Code functions and model into software (R or Python). Display results and uncertainty associated with them.

20% Communicate findings to other researchers and decision-makers; disseminate findings to the broader public and others via a dashboard, briefs, and scientific manuscripts; supervise students and/or postdocs working on the same topic.

10% Contributes to other SALURBAL activities related to the area of expertise (environmental science and health). This includes participating in manuscripts, providing expert opinion on topics of interest, and interacting with SALURBAL colleagues.

10% Plans, organizes and supervises the work of graduate and undergraduate students. Provides project management and coordination. Participates in group meetings (Berkeley-focused and SALURBAL); monitors and reports the progress of the project components; organizing and running internal and external virtual meetings for the QRA with other SALURBAL parties; and participating in training and skills development.
Required Qualifications

• Proven experience in quantitative risk assessment, including the development of modules around understanding the health impacts of interventions or behaviors.
• A general understanding of the international landscape on health promotion and disease prevention, including multilateral organizations (e.g., UN, development banks, etc.).
• A proven or promising publications record that include health impact assessment generally, and quantitative risk assessment in particular.
• Experience with data analysis, statistical methods and related statistical software (e.g., R, Matlab, Python).
• Interest in examining effects environmental exposures related to a changing climate on health outcomes.
• Ability to synthesize the empirical literature.
• Experience and interest in leading manuscripts for publication in peer-reviewed journals.
• Detail-oriented, extremely organized, and comfortable with multitasking.
• Excellent oral, written, analytical, organizational, and interpersonal skills.
• Team oriented and experienced working with diverse groups of investigators and trainees.

Preferred Qualifications

• Preferred the successful candidate holds, or be about to be conferred, a doctoral degree in Public or Community Health, Epidemiology, Geography, Environmental Sciences, Earth Sciences, Engineering, Engineering or related fields (or equivalent international degree).

Under California law, the University of California, Berkeley is required to provide a reasonable estimate of the compensation range for this role and should not offer a salary outside of the range posted in this job announcement. This range takes into account the wide range of factors that are considered in making compensation decisions including but not limited to experience, skills, knowledge, abilities, education, licensure and certifications, analysis of internal equity, and other business and organizational needs. It is not typical for an individual to be offered a salary at or near the top of the range for a position. Salary offers are determined based on final candidate qualifications and experience.

The budgeted salary or hourly range that the University reasonably expects to pay for this position is $109,200 to $133,850 yearly, prorated based on FTE percentage. This is a 55% FTE, 2-year contract position that may increase to up to 85% FTE depending on future funding. This position is eligible for benefits.
